Save Our Hedgerows In December 2019, "Save Our Hedgerows" group was founded as a response to recent dramatic increases in hedgerow removal across South Tipperary.

Our primary goals are to promote hedgerow preservation and to reduce levels of unnecessary hedgerow removal.

We got this picture from Luke Mooney age 10 from Ballymackey Co Tipperary with the binoculars which he won in our hedgerow quiz at the North Tipperary Agricultural Show a few weeks ago. Big thanks to the River Basin Management Service in Clonmel for sponsoring the prizes.

We had a laugh at the recent Nenagh Show. At the end, as we were tidying up, Sean O’Farrell from Cloncannon Biofarm presented Tom Gallagher’The Owl Man from Thurles’ with a bouquet of our display of hedge plants. The rain had arrived but we’d had a great turnout at the stand.

Tom drew his usual crowd as he explained the importance of hedgerows to barn owls who in turn reward farmers by dealing with rats!

We were joined by Dr Stephanie Stiegel, German hedgerow expert who is currently researching at Limerick University.

We had a stand at the amazing Bannow and Rathangan farm show in Wexford on Thursday where hedgerows and summer shade was a hot topic! We enjoyed a discussion in the Sustainability Tent between Wexford tillage farmer Don Somers and Karin Stierle from the Native Irish Honey Bee Society. Don spoke of the role of good hedgerows in flood reduction, soil health and for providing beneficial insects which reduce aphid populations. Now we’re all loaded and ready for the next farm show! 🐦‍⬛🦔🪴😁

We were at the amazing Bannow and Rathangan farm show in Wexford on Thursday where the value of hedgerows for shade was a hot topic! We enjoyed a discussion in the Sustainability tent between Wexford tillage farmer Don Somers and Karin Stierle from the Native Irish Honey Bee Society. Don spoke of the benefits of good hedges to his tillage operation including flood reduction and beneficial hedge insects which feed on aphids. Now we’re all loaded up for the next show!

Great day out at the Clonmel Show yesterday. Huge interest in hedgerows and everything that lives there. Tom Gallagher ‘the Owl Man’ from Thurles stole the show and inspired people of all ages with his passion and knowledge. Fiona Kennedy, Tipperary Rose picked the winning entry in the hedge quiz for a pair of binoculars. Thanks to all our helpers 🙏 Next stop the Bannow and Rathangan Show this Thursday July 9 in Wexford.

We had a great day at the Clonmel Show yesterday. Huge interest in hedgerows and everything that lives there. Tom Gallagher the ‘Owl Man’ from Thurles stole the show inspiring people of all ages with his knowledge and love of hedgelife. Fiona Kennedy, Tipperary Rose did the honours drawing the winning entry in the hedge quiz for the prize of a pair of binoculars. Hedgerows Ireland were key witnesses in this case which concluded today in Clonmel Circuit Court. Given the extent of the hedgerows removed and the breach of a prohibition order one year later we might have expected a higher fine but the good news is that Coolmore have publicly committed to ceasing hedgerow removal. We’ve issued an invitation to work with them on a Tipperary hedgerow rejuvenation project. Watch this space! 🤞
