Over two weeks, 15 young Traveller girls took part in a creative summer camp with Tipperary Rural Travellers Project, exploring the rich tradition of Beady Pockets while bringing Traveller heritage into a modern creative setting.
Led by creative facilitator Francesca Hutchinson, the young people explored hand sewing, textile art, machine sewing and upcycling. Transforming t-shirts and materials into creative pieces while learning new skills along the way. 🪡🎨
This project was about culture, connection, confidence and creating a space where young people could explore and celebrate their heritage, in their own way.
The project builds on the trusted relationship already established between Francesca and the group through previous creative projects. At LCYP, we recognise the importance of these long-term relationships between young people and skilled creative practitioners, creating the foundations for meaningful and sustained creative engagement.
A huge thank you to the Education Peer Support Workers at Tipperary Rural Traveller Project, whose cultural knowledge, sensitivity and support were integral to making this project such a positive and meaningful experience. 💜
