‘John described the workings of the machines as “mechanical wizardry and magic” – and he’s not far off the mark with those words!’ The recently announced return of the Strokestown Democrat printing press prompted relations of the Morahan brothers to return to the town to investigate and ...

Over the past number of months, our community heritage group chairman Declan Kavanagh has led an exciting project to bring about the homecoming of The Strokestown Democrat printing press. 🗞️

This video documents the journey home and outlines our public appeal to try and find a new home to get this spectacular piece of our towns heritage restored and on public display. ❤️

Fair play to Declan & all our community heritage members for the amazing work done to make this into a reality. 👏

A very special thank you also to Pat Brogan Tractors for sponsoring us to pick this up, Michael Martin for driving and all the spectacular folks at Bunratty Castle who kept this gem safe for all these years. Ye are legends one and all! 😃

One of the most poignant artefacts in the National Famine Museum at Strokestown Park is the Eviction Crowbar.

The Eviction Crowbar was frequently used to level or knock a house or cabin to ensure the family could not return.

According to local lore, this crowbar was stolen by a man named Dockery or Doherty, he took it from a group carrying out evictions in north Roscommon. The crowbar was later discovered in Rathnoravanagh Bog by John Feeily and was kindly donated to the National Famine museum by Peter Connellan.

Discover this and many other moving artefacts at the National Famine Museum.

The Strokestown Community Heritage Group would like to sincerely thank the Connaught Rural Women’s Group for their recent donation of books, previously to them by the Sister’s of Mercy, to the Roscommon Co. Library for preservation. ❤️

These books cover a wide range of religious and non religious topics and also include a wide range of Capuchin Annual’s from the 70’s. They have found a good forever home with the county library system and are in the best possible hands now for preservation for future generations. 😇

🔗🙂 Please donate whatever you can: https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/StrokestownChristmasLights2025

It won’t be long before we see our volunteers, like Jason Hanly & John Cullinan pictured below, are back out to take down our lights display and pack it away safely for another year. 🎄

Getting these lights up and down is a big operation involving many members of our community here in Strokestown and beyond and it takes cold hard cash to cover bulb replacements, repairs and expansion of our beautiful lights display. 🎉

We are so so close to hitting our €3k target, just €210 short. If you could dig behind the couch cushions to help us reach our goal, all of us here at the Christmas Lights committee would be eternally grateful! ❤️

So with that said please donate whatever you can in the last push for us to reach our fundraising target for 2025 💰: https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/StrokestownChristmasLights2025

Thank you Strokestown! 💛🖤
