ST. TERESA OF JESUS

Today,15th Oct. we celebrate the feast of the above saint. Born in Avila 1515 [Spain] into a large wealthy family, she experienced many ups and down before eventually founding the Discalced Carmelite Order. She succeeded in establishing 17 convents across Spain.

Teresa was a mystic with a good sense of humour and is known for her spiritual writing. She is the first woman to be named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970

The following is one of her quotes.

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing,
God is unchanging.
Patience gains all,
Nothing is lacking to those who have God
God alone is sufficient.

2nd.Oct. HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS

The Lord says,
'I myself will send an angel before you to guard you as you go and to bring you to the place that I have prepared '

The psalm says,
'Upon you no evil shall fall,
No plague approach where you dwell.
For you has he commanded his angels,
To keep you in all your ways'

Are we in touch with our angel every day?

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God's love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side ,
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen

ST. THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX 1873-1897

Today, 1st Oct. we celebrate the above feast.
Thérèse, a Carmelite nun, and Doctor of the church was known as the Little Flower. Because of very poor health and tuberculosis she was prevented from going on the missions.
However she prayed constantly and believed in doing small everyday actions with great love for God in whom she had complete trust and confidence.
Thérèse was canonised in 1925 and declared patroness of foreign missions in 1927
Her last words while gazing at a crucifix were ,
Oh....I love Him.....My God, I ...love..Thee

She died when only twenty four years of age.

Lisieux is the second most important Catholic pilgrimage site in France , famous for the Basilica of Sainte -Thérèse, dedicated to Saint Thérèse.
Perhaps you will pay a visit someday.

THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS

There is a lot of suffering in the world which results from wars, accidents, diseases, hunger, sickness, etc.
Today on the above feast we remember that Mary also suffered greatly during her lifetime. Her heart was pierced with a sword on seeing her Son crucified on the cross. Pope St. John Paul ll said
'Turn your eyes incessantly to the Blessed Virgin ; she, who is the Mother of Sorrows and also the Mother of Consolation can understand you and completely help you'.

Hereunder is the PIETÀ by Michelangelo which is located in St.Peter's Basilica, Rome.
Jesus is taken down from the cross and is given to his mother Mary.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today, 8th of Sept.we celebrate the above feast.
Gerald Manly Hopkins wrote a poem entitled,
'The Blessed Virgin Compared to the Air we Breathe'.

Hereunder are a few lines taken from the poem.
'Wild air, world - mothering air,
Nestling me everywhere- - - - -- ---------------
I say that we are wound
With mercy round and round
As if with air: the same
Is Mary, more by name.
She, wild web, wondrous robe,
Mantles the guilty globe,
Since God has let dispense
Her prayers his providence'.

In this poem the poet says that just as the air around us plays a big part in our physical life so Mary sustains our spiritual life and is an advocate for us with her Son.

The recitation of the Rosary would be a suitable prayer today either with others or on your own.

Be happy, patient and forgiving today.

St. Patrick's Pastoral Area

The above area consists of the following four parishes,
Slane,
Rathkenny,
Beauparc,
Duleek.

There are nine churches in this pastoral area. Owing to a shortage of clergy it is necessary to have parish groupings.
Certain advantages will accrue from this formation as well as disadvantages.

For a start please note the following new Mass times in two parishes, namely
Slane and Rathkenny, which will take effect from Sept. 5th & 6th [next weekend]

Slane Parish

Saturday Vigil : Slane 7.15 pm
Monknewtown : Sunday 9am
Slane : Sunday 11am

Rathkenny Parish

Rushwee, Saturday Vigil, 6.15 pm
Grangegeeth, Sunday, 10 am
Rathkenny, Sunday, 12pm

The blue area on the map hereunder is our new St. Patrick's Pastoral Area.

15th AUGUST LADY-WELL AT SLANE,
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF Mary

Preparations are well underway for Lady- Well Day.
Following 7 p.m. Mass on August 14th. [ vigil of feast] Fr. Richard will lead a procession from St. Patrick's Catholic Church to Lady Well in the grounds of Slane castle to celebrate the feast of the Assumption. A statue of Mary will be carried in the procession.

On Saturday 15th, pilgrims are welcome to bring a bottle to fill with water from the blessed well, leave flowers, write petitions, sit in quiet prayer, read or join in the many rosaries and prayers which will be recited throughout the day.

The Parish Pastoral Council have arranged with Flexibus to transport pilgrims to and from Lady-Well from the main Castle Gate on the Slane/Navan road.
Flexibus, funded by Slane Parish will provide this service for pilgrims with mobility issues, free of charge, from 11.30 am till 4.00 pm.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be celebrated in St Patrick's Church Slane at 11am on Sunday Aug. 16th for the intentions of all.

We look forward to seeing you at Lady Well again this year.
