A few words from the group on the latest development in the project to construct Newport's Waste Water Treatment Facility.
On the 15th May last, the Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA) issued a Maritime Usage Licence to Uisce Eireann (UE) to survey Clew Bay and the coastline. This will allow UE's engineering and design team to gather and collate data about the coast and ocean. This data will influence how and where Newport's Waste Water Treatment Facility will operate and be located, and will therefore, influence the associated planning application.
We understand from UE that they anticipate making a planning application in respect of the treatment facility in early 2027.
The issuing of this licence flags real progress for the project.
This treatment facility will end the unacceptable practice of discharging raw sewage into our bay (Clew Bay) and will ensure that wastewater is adequately treated and meets appropriate standards before being safely discharged into the marine environment. It is a critical piece of infrastructure necessary to sustain and see future development of our town for future generations.
We will continue to engage with UE and all other stakeholders to ensure that the project moves on without delay.
We are very thankful to everyone who continues to support the progression of this project.
Final thought, our harbour is stunning, imagine how we could use it!
