Where is raw sewage still being discharged into seas and rivers in Ireland? The EPA report, Urban Wastewater Treatment in 2024, highlighted that the volume of raw sewage discharged into seas and rivers every day has more than halved since early 2024. However, wastewater discharged from 59 per cent of Ireland’s licensed treatment plants failed to consistently meet standards set in EPA licences to prevent pollution. The main causes are inadequate infrastructure and poor operational management of treatment plants.

A huge thank you to Cllr Brendan Mulroy for organising Monday’s powerful protest outside the Uisce Éireann offices in Castlebar – and to all the councillors and representatives who stood with us: Peter Flynn, Chris Maxwell, John O’Malley and Patsy O’Brien.

Also to local voices who showed up for Newport:
Newport Tidy Towns,. Clewbay Charters, NADDCo, Newport Mayo, the Newport Sewerage Concern Group, and Newport Business Association – thank you all.

We’re thrilled that this issue is finally getting national attention. After years of delay, there’s real momentum: Uisce Éireann Irish Water have now committed to prioritising the Newport scheme with six-monthly updates promised. This is a huge step forward.

Let’s keep the pressure on and keep working together until Newport has the proper sewage infrastructure it urgently needs and deserves.

THE continued failure to deliver the long-awaited wastewater treatment plant for Newport shows how little urgency the government is attaching to the project despite decades of promises, says Sinn Féin Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh.
