Join the junior angling club this summer!

Passion for looking after our lakes and rivers often starts with creating magical memories on the water. By joing the Junior Angling club kids will have great fun learning about catch and release fishing, how to carefully handle fish, and how to catch them too of course!

We plan to have our first outing with Darragh in June, weather permitting. We hope to get out on the water regularly through the summer.

Inspiring stories of self-sufficiency and community reslience shared by Deirdre McGuirk, Project Officer for The Village Shops Project / AnSiopaรitรบil ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

The The Village Shops Project explores the significant role of village shops and shopping locally in preserving community resilience and food security. The project will look at how these systems from our past might be reintroduced into modern society in order for communities to live more sustainably.

So far Deirdre has identified over 180 shops which existed in Louisburgh and over 20 in Killeen between 1900 and 1980!

This project is funded by the Sunflower Charitable Foundation and coordinated by Killeen Community Council in collaboration with Louisburgh Killeen Heritage, Louisburgh Community Futures, Louisburgh Tidy Towns and Climate Action Louisburgh Locality (CALL).

Stay tuned for the next installment of the tour and if you have memories to share or want to find out more about the project, leave us a comment or email Deirdre [email protected]

Did you know that you can assess the level of pollution in a stream simply by looking at the macroinvertebrates in there?

As part of our Blue Dot to the Sea project, we had a great afternoon with TY students from Sancta Maria and LAWPRO learning about Water Quality Monitoring on the Bunowen river. We learnt about the Citizen Science Stream Index and how we as a community can easily monitor the quality of our own waterbodies, through kick-sampling and looking at what little creatures we find.

You can learn to do it yourself and share what you find at https://lawaters.ie/citizen-science/

We hope to run more workshops on how to kick-sample soon so watch this space!
