CAN YOU HELP ..Last week we lost a long term resident in “Del”(the trotter)when we brought him in he was skin and bones with an injured hoof after been tied by his hock for too long and too tight, we battled for a long time to get it to a point where he was comfortable and he gained weight and looked great, but in recent months we noticed a deterioration of the hoof and the occasional abscess which became more and more frequent, we had vets and farrier’s and we tried everything we could to help him but noting was working, my knowledge of horses is basic but no one else offered to help Del so we did our best, i had a feeling this hoof was going to be his downfall at some point as the blood flow was compramised for far too long, his hock looked swollen constantly but it was scar tissue, we were put on to Shane at Killarney Veterinary and explained dels story and Shane very kindly offered to X-ray him, we knew in our hearts that del was short on time but we needed to know for sure that we were making the right decisions and as you can see in the photos how badly damaged his pedal bone also known as the coffin bone, now i know why its called that, although not the answer we wanted but it did come as a relief to know we did what we could and that we were making the right call to let Del go. He was a sweet sweet boy we could do anything with him the first picture sums him up, hanging out with his chicken buddies, it sickens me to see these beautiful creatures being flogged and ran to within an inch of there life’s sometimes taking there lives and yet it continues to go unpunished. You can blame the Guards, but it really does boils down to p**s poor animal welfare laws in this country. The shower of so called humans that call themselves our government have a lot to answer for, cruel fox hunting is ok. Putting young pups into crates and sending them half ways around the world a lot of them dying en-route is ok? While other countries are bringing in laws to combat and recognise the loneliness dogs feel when there on there own we still think its ok to have a dog chained up all day….id like to chain the person up who put that into law and see how they feel. However they feel better about themselves cause they said the chain has to be a certain length the list goes on and on and we recently saw the politicians of this country so far disconnected it beggars belief, for Martin to accuse the protesters of causing welfare issues by not allowing feed to leave the ports was possibly one of the most hypocritical things i’ve hear in a long time
Between a rent increase on our shop(which was due), the increase in fuel now costing me an extra sixty to seventy euros a week just to open the shop doors. Of course they will blame the war/Trump etc but the reality is the systems that are broke in this country have been broken for decades, the health system which I have had first hand experience with. After three back operations i still need nerve blocks annually and i used to wait between 5 and 6 weeks from consultation to procedure however my last consult was in September and ive still no idea when ill get that 20minute procedure to give me the help I so badly need to keep going daily. I feel for the Nurses/Doctors who are at the brunt end of decisions made by an incompetent government. I need a knee replacement and it looks like ill be going abroad for it as waiting for the next three years is not an option the housing crisis has had a big impact on rescues as animals are not allowed in a lot of private rentals and restricted breeds are not allowed in council houses/estates.
Animals do so much for us, dogs for the blind, mountain rescue dogs, sniffer dogs, police dogs/horses, the list goes on but each and every government for the last 100 years have treated them like vermin. The same crowd are voted in time and time again, but then is there anyone out there that would make a difference????? Some might remember Lady our Great Pyrenees locked in a cage for six years of her life with chronic seizures, again we have done our best with her and life has been so much brighter for her but she will likely never be homed as shes big and costs a lot to medicate every month, but if ever a dog deserved a better life its her, but as i write this she is going under the knife as we found a mass that was restricting her urine we can only hope its noting too serious and can be successfully operated on because we were just seeing life and enjoyment coming into her face. Small rescues like ours are under serious threat now and there seems to be some confusion over the future of some of the larger rescues,100 million to the greyhound horse racing industry 6 million to rescues, there’s a massive imbalance there how many times have we taken in dogs like we did last weekend because there owners were ill and in palliative care if the smaller rescues go under where would all these dogs go? These dogs and other animals are in some cases the only family these people have and they care about nothing only to know we will do our best to find the best homes for their four legged friends and family they leave behind. We are not government funded it would be very hypocritical of me to criticize a government that have repeatedly left the people and animals of this country down.
