Cliona's Foundation

Cliona's Foundation Cliona's provides financial assistance for families with a seriously sick child

Cliona’s Foundation was founded by Brendan & Terry Ring following the death of their own daughter Cliona at 15 following 8 years treatment for an inoperable brain tumour. During this time they met many parents struggling financially with the hidden costs of looking after their sick child and saw first-hand the enormous toll it took on these families. Right now, there are 4,000 children battling wi

th a life limiting illness in Ireland. 400 of these will die this year. Parents of these 4,000 children are away from home for long periods of time while they care for their child- paying for accommodation, food, transport, having to take time out of work, pay childminders to look after their other children and also have to purchase specialized equipment. Non-medical expenses, particularly for parents outside Dublin who have to travel to visit their child in hospital can run to as much as €160 a day. It is estimated that it costs an additional €10,000 per annum to care for a child with a life limiting illness. For some families it is the harsh reality that they cannot afford to be by their sick child’s bedside while in hospital due to the associated costs. Funds raised by Cliona’s Foundation are not used to pay for the child’s medical care: rather donations are made to help with the “hidden” costs of caring

🎗️ September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Around 200 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer each year in Ireland

This month is an opportunity to shine a light on the true impact of childhood cancer and make visible what cannot always be seen or understood. 👀

Alongside the emotional impact of a diagnosis, families face the additional hidden financial costs of approximately €15,000 per year—placing them under severe financial pressure!

We believe no family should struggle financially while caring for their sick child & provide support to help alleviate some of that pressure.

Of the 151 families we have supported so far this year, 40 have children currently on a cancer treatment journey. 🏥

We want to send our love and support to every family with a child undergoing treatment and remind them that we are here for them. 💙

🙏 If you are a family, or know a family, who is struggling, please get in touch. And if you can help us continue supporting these families, we would love to hear from you. 💙

🚶‍♀️This weeks motivation is the amazing Johnny Gaynor from Limerick who is on Day 4 of his solo 800km trek of The French way of the Camino de Santiago from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela

He is walking in memory of his wife Catherine who passed away from motor neurone disease in October 2023 and we are extremely privileged to be one of 3 beneficiaries of this huge commitment & challenge💙

Johnny started his journey on August 28th and is scheduled to reach his destination on the 21st/22nd September📆

Having already completed 800km of the Camino in 2024, his resilience and mental & physical strength is unbelievable having overcome his own health issues over the past 2 years !

It's day 4, 108km completed, 21 days & 700km to go & he will have that smile every step of the way😄

We are beyond grateful for the huge efforts they have put into not only getting them to the start line but the unbelievable funds raised and awareness created. €35,000 raised so far and increasing daily !

How special is it to have the Cliona's brand visible on the other side of the world, making a difference to so many families 💙

Well known Limerick man John Loftus turns 79 tomorrow Friday 29th and to celebrate he is launching a phenomonal challenge for Cliona's that will take him through to his 80th birthday!

Over the next 12 months, his target is to walk at least 2,000km – more than the equivalent of four times the length of Ireland.

This challenge is not about speed. It's about getting up, getting out and putting one foot in front of the other for families who are facing much greater challenges every day.

He is launching the challenge with a special Mid West Mentoring walk 🚶‍♀️

📍 Daniel O’Connell Monument, The Crescent, Limerick
📅 Friday, 28th August
⏰ 11.00am – Networking
🚶 11.15am – Walk begins

The walk will take in Limerick’s three bridges and return to the monument afterwards for refreshments, a chat and some networking.

John & Cliona's would love to see as many friends, MWM members, supporters and members of the wider community as possible there to help him take the first steps.🙏

If you cannot make it but want to support this massive undertaking you can donate through the link below

What a great visit to the Edwards Lifesciences plant in Limerick last week to meet with their Global VP Joe Nuzzolese, Limerick Plant Manager Emmet Kelly and a number of the members of their charity committee to take delivery of a fantastic donation of €12,140!

This donation was a mix of the proceeds from their World Cup Staff Soccer tournament which was matched by the Company and also a very generous grant from the Edwards Foundation.

We were delighted to be able to meet those that championed for Cliona's, thank everyone for their generosity, kindness & understanding and share with them the impact of their support on the 3 families that this donation will make 💙

Thank you Edwards Lifesciences for making a real difference👏
