🌟 Feel Good Friday 🌟

Sometimes recovery doesn't look like a court victory.

Sometimes it doesn't look like a major milestone.

Sometimes recovery looks like:

β˜• showing up to a coffee morning when you almost stayed home

🌿 going for a walk and noticing the sunshine

🧘 attending a yoga class and taking a deep breath

πŸ’œ sharing your story for the first time

😊 laughing without feeling guilty

🀝 making a new connection

✨ beginning to believe that life can feel different

At The Uplift Project, we celebrate the big victories, but we celebrate the small ones too.

Because healing happens in the little moments.

The moments where confidence starts to return.
The moments where hope begins to grow.
The moments where survivors realise they are more than what happened to them.

This week, we have watched women support one another, challenge themselves, try new things, and take important steps forward in their recovery journeys.

To every woman who attended a group, reached out for support, shared her story, or simply kept going this week:

We see you. We are proud of you. And we are cheering you on πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½

As we head into the weekend, tell us:

πŸ’¬ What is one small win you are celebrating this week?

Every Survivor's Story Matters

This week, we have been deeply moved by the courage of several women living within the International Protection system who have chosen to share their experiences through Donegal News.

We want to extend our sincere thanks to these women for trusting others with their stories. Speaking publicly about trauma, abuse, displacement, and the challenges of rebuilding a life takes immense strength.

At The Uplift Project, we have the privilege of working alongside women from many different countries and backgrounds. While every journey is unique, many women living in IPAS face additional barriers including isolation, uncertainty, lack of support networks, language barriers, housing challenges, and difficulties accessing specialist services.

For survivors of domestic abuse, these challenges can become even more complex.

What these stories remind us is that healing, safety, and support should not depend on where someone was born, what language they speak, or their immigration status.

Every woman deserves to feel safe.

Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.

And every survivor deserves to be heard.

We are grateful to Donegal News for continuing to highlight these important conversations and to the women who are helping to break the silence. By sharing their experiences, they are not only raising awareness but helping services, communities, and decision-makers better understand what support is truly needed.

You can read their story here: https://donegalnews.com/donegal-women-terrified-by-galway-murder/

Your voice matters.
Your story matters.
And your experiences can help create change.

Positive conversations are happening in Donegal about strengthening responses to domestic abuse and we are proud to continue these important conversations.

While crisis support is essential, survivors also need long-term recovery, housing, legal advocacy, support for their children, and opportunities to rebuild their lives.

Real change happens when we listen to survivor voices, invest in prevention, and work together across services and communities.

Because survivors deserve more than safety β€” they deserve the chance to thrive.

Raising community awareness of domestic abuse is one of the cornerstones of prevention and at the same time a great way to offer direct support to victims.

This article by Donegal News discusses an interagency initiative last year that targeted salon professionals in county Donegal, as the staff often hear stories from clients and can offer advice in a confidential setting.

Here at the Uplift Project we work closely with a number of local service providers including gym and fitness centres, yoga practitioners, nail and beauty salons and mindfulness and wellness facilitators. As well as delivering courses to clients the professionals engage with us to learn about signs to look out for, conversations that may arise and we are always here to answer questions no matter how simple about domestic abuse or addiction.

While no single initiative can eradicate domestic violence, education and awareness are important steps towards creating lasting cultural change. By increasing understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse, challenging harmful attitudes and misconceptions, and equipping individuals and organisations with the knowledge to respond effectively, we can contribute to a community that is better informed, more supportive of survivors, and increasingly focused on prevention.

We believe that fostering these conversations and building capacity within our communities is a vital part of moving towards a future where domestic violence is less tolerated, better understood, and ultimately prevented.

Breaking the silence is not easy.

Sharing experiences takes courage.

But every story told helps reduce stigma, increases understanding, and creates opportunities for meaningful change.

At The Uplift Project, survivor voices are not an afterthought.

They are at the centre of everything we do.

Because services should not be designed *for* survivors without also being designed *with* survivors.

Survivor Voices Are Changing the Conversation

For too long, survivors of domestic abuse were expected to suffer in silence.

Today, more women are bravely sharing their experiences and, in doing so, they are helping to shine a light on the realities of domestic abuse, post-separation abuse, family court challenges, housing barriers, and the long road to recovery.

At The Uplift Project, one of the most powerful lessons we have learned is this:

‼️The people closest to the problem are often closest to the solution ‼️

Many of the programmes, supports, and services we are developing have been informed directly by conversations with survivors. Their experiences have highlighted gaps in existing systems, identified what is working, and challenged us to think differently about recovery.

What is one thing you think Ireland could do better to support survivors of domestic abuse?

Too often, children become the hidden victims of domestic abuse.

At The Uplift Project, we believe recovery must be family-centred.

Supporting a mother is vital, but true recovery also means helping children process their experiences, rebuild confidence, develop resilience, and feel safe again.

This is why we are working towards securing dedicated youth and children's supports delivered by experienced professionals who understand trauma, child development, and the long-term impact of domestic abuse.

Because children deserve more than survival. They deserve the opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive.

Children Experience Domestic Abuse Too

When we talk about domestic abuse, we often focus on the adult survivor.

But what about the children?

Even when a child is not directly harmed, living in an environment of fear, tension, coercive control, or violence can have a profound impact on their development, emotional wellbeing, and sense of safety.

Children may experience:
πŸ’œ anxiety and worry
πŸ’œ difficulties regulating emotions
πŸ’œ changes in behaviour
πŸ’œ sleep disturbances
πŸ’œ difficulties in school
πŸ’œ low self-esteem
πŸ’œ challenges forming healthy relationships
πŸ’œ a constantly activated nervous system

Too often, children become the hidden victims of domestic abuse.

At The Uplift Project, we believe recovery must be family-centred.

Supporting a mother is vital, but true recovery also means helping children process their experiences, rebuild confidence, develop resilience, and feel safe again.

Leaving is often the beginning, not the end.

For many survivors, escaping abuse is only the first step in a much longer journey of healing, rebuilding, and recovery.

Safety matters. But so does what comes next.

At The Uplift Project, we believe survivors deserve more than crisis intervention alone. They deserve support, connection, empowerment, and opportunities to thrive.

Because recovery matters. And every woman deserves the chance to build a life filled with hope.

What Happens After She Leaves?

For many survivors, leaving an abusive relationship is not the end of the journey.

In reality, it is often where the hardest part begins.

After the refuge.
After the emergency accommodation.
After the court application.
After the safety plan.

Many women are left navigating:
πŸ’œ trauma and anxiety
πŸ’œ family court proceedings
πŸ’œ housing insecurity
πŸ’œ financial pressures
πŸ’œ parenting challenges
πŸ’œ social isolation
πŸ’œ rebuilding confidence and self-worth
πŸ’œ helping children recover from what they have experienced

Yet many support systems remain focused primarily on crisis intervention.

Crisis support saves lives. It is essential.

But survivors are telling us something important:

Recovery matters too.

At The Uplift Project, we believe women deserve more than simply surviving abuse. They deserve opportunities to heal, rebuild, reconnect, and thrive.

That is why our approach focuses on long-term recovery through specialist support, nervous system regulation, confidence building, peer connection, trauma-informed programmes, and support for children and families.

Because the goal should never be just getting out.

The goal should be building a life worth staying for.

As Ireland continues to examine its response to domestic violence, perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask is:

🌟If you or someone you know could benefit from support, register today.
