Help Us Enhance Lough Yugan – A Special Place for Our Community
Nestled just a few metres from the shores of Lough Allen, Lough Yugan — also known as Lower Annagh Fishing Lake — is one of Dowra and Ballinaglera's hidden gems.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside, quiet country roads and an abundance of wildlife, this peaceful spot is enjoyed by local people and visitors alike. It is a place for walking, fishing, cycling, exploring nature, spending time with family and simply enjoying the beauty on our doorstep.
Our community group, Dowra Green Village Group, is passionate about caring for this special place and helping it become an even more welcoming and accessible space for everyone.
We have been fortunate to receive grant funding through the 2024/2025 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht and Leitrim County Council. This funding has allowed us to make improvements, but we now need to raise additional match funding to help us complete the project.
WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR?
We have already begun improving the area by developing the site and have also created a new picnic and recreation space including;
Picnic Benches including a wheelchair-accessible picnic table, helping more people enjoy the lakeside together.
A viewing area with benches, providing a peaceful place to sit, take in the scenery and enjoy the wildlife.
A bike repair station & a bike rack , supporting walkers and cyclists who use the area and encouraging more people to explore the surrounding countryside by bike.
Installing road & Information signs to define and showcase the area.
These improvements are only the beginning. Our aim is to create a welcoming outdoor space that can be enjoyed by local families, children, older people, visitors, walkers, cyclists, anglers and nature lovers.
Lough Yugan is much more than a fishing lake. It is home to an incredible variety of wildlife and plant life, including red squirrels, pine martens, butterflies, dragonflies and beautiful native vegetation. It is also part of a landscape rich in history, heritage and community, with the villages of Dowra and Ballinaglera forming an important part of this beautiful part of County Leitrim.

We are asking our community, friends, visitors and anyone who loves this beautiful area to help us raise the match funding needed.
