Some highlights from last weekend's Burren in Bloom Walks 🐝

Special thanks to Michelle Larkin from the Biodiversity Ireland for leading our Bee Walk, Brendan Dunford for his Burren Farm Walk, and Tom & Nuala Lynch for leading the Dusk Chorus.

Pictured is the Shrill Carder Bee, one of Ireland's rarest bumblebees. The Burren’s unique landscape and traditional farming practices create one of the last strongholds for this endangered bee in Ireland. A reminder of how important this extraordinary place is for biodiversity and pollinators 📷 Karen van Dorp

Some highlights from last weekend at Burren in Bloom 🌼Huge thanks to Jesmond Harding for leading our Butterfly Walks and to Colette and Oliver Nagle for a hill walk and yoga session at Slieve Carron.

Next weekend marks the final weekend of this year’s festival, and there are still a few tickets available for the 'Return to Winterage' walk on Friday. This guided walk offers a chance to experience the remarkable biodiversity and wildflowers flourishing on a Burren farm, shaped by the unique limestone landscape and the traditional winterage farming practice that makes the Burren so distinctive.

Some tickets also remaining for 'Inside The Hare's Corner' next Saturday. This will explore an exemplary Hare’s Corner site with Dr. Sharon Parr and the Hare’s Corner team. Learn about tree planting, grassland and hedgerow management, pond creation, and how to plan actions with respect for existing habitats and wildlife. Also hear from the Hare’s Corner team about the programme’s growth and the positive impact it’s having on farms and communities across Ireland.

Following an open call for creative projects exploring the Burren’s geoheritage, Burrenbeo Trust has selected artist Eileen Hutton to develop an interactive project inspired by the region’s geological heritage. We would like to sincerely thank all applicants for the imagination and thoughtfulness shown in their proposals.

As part of the project, Eileen is looking for up to 30 volunteers to collect small soil samples from locations across the Burren. These samples will be used to create a participatory artwork exploring the relationship between limestone geology, soil, farming, ecology, and deep time.

The project uses soil chromatography, a camera-less photographic process that translates soil samples into circular images. These images can reveal traces of minerals, organic matter, microbial activity, and soil structure. Together, they will form a visual atlas of the Burren’s living ground.

Participants will be asked to collect a small soil sample, approximately 5–10 grams, from a location in the Burren. A simple sampling kit will be posted out to you, including materials, guidance, and prompts for observing the soil, stone, and surrounding landscape.

No specialist knowledge is required - only curiosity, care, and a connection to the Burren.

Returned samples will be developed into soil chromatograms, digitised for Burrenbeo Trust, and shared as the project develops. We are grateful to the Geological Survey Ireland for their support of this project.

🌱 National Volunteer Week brought a wonderful day out for Burrenbeo Conservation Volunteers at Bernard Carey’s tree nursery, where volunteers helped with the weeding and potting of saplings grown from seed collected under licence and Bernard’s supervision during BCV outings in the Burren over previous years.

These Burren Pine and other native species will eventually be distributed through Burrenbeo’s Hare’s Corner programme and nursery sites across the Burren, supporting local biodiversity and restoration efforts.

We are so grateful for all of our fantastic volunteers whose enthusiasm, generosity and hard work make initiatives like this possible! Would you like to join our volunteer group? Find more info on our website (www.burrenbeo.com/bcv) or contact [email protected]

Week Two of Burren in Bloom brought adventure, creativity, birdsong, and discovery to the Burren 🌿

Young explorers joined Karen van Dorp for Outdoor Adventure for Kids, while participants got creative at the Nature Zine Workshop with Maeve Stone.
