Care for Creation Gathering – Diocese of Kilmore

All are warmly invited to a diocesan gathering celebrating Care of Creation initiatives taking place across the Diocese of Kilmore on Wednesday 10th June 2026 at 7:00p.m. in the Kilmore Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Cullies, Cavan H12 E5C7.

Hosted by the Kilmore Care of Creation Group together with Bishop Martin Hayes, the evening will include prayer, reflection, sharing of parish projects and preparation for the Season of Creation 2026.

Parishes from across Cavan and Leitrim involved in biodiversity, “Return to Nature” and environmental projects will participate.

Among the projects being celebrated are the “Return to Nature” initiatives in the Leitrim parishes of Ballinamore, Drumkeeran, Carrigallen & Drumreilly Upper and Glenfarne, together with projects underway or planned in the Cavan parishes of Killeshandra, Drumgoon, Laragh, Lavey and Mullagh. We will also acknowledge the extensive work already completed in the parishes of Killann (Bailieborough), Urney & Annagelliff (Cathedral) and Mullagh.

The evening will also help prepare for the Season of Creation 2026 and for the special Season of Creation Mass to be broadcast on RTÉ One from the Cathedral of SS Patrick & Felim on Sunday 6th September 2026 at 11:00a.m.

All are welcome — particularly parish groups, schools, community organisations, environmental groups, clergy, parish volunteers and anyone with an interest in faith, ecology, biodiversity, sustainability and care for creation.

Researchers have named a moth species “Pyralis papaleonei,” or “Pope Leo moth," in honor of the Holy Father.

“The new species is dedicated to the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV,” authors Peter Huemer, Lauri Kaila, and Andreas H. Segerer wrote in a research article on the species. “The pontiff is a strong advocate of climate and environmental protection, and we hope that his voice may serve as an example for humanity.”

TINY FOREST INITIATIVE: Members of the Kilmore Care of Creation group, local community groups from across County Cavan, John Toland of CCLD, Forester and Education Specialist, Daniel Monaghan and Ecologist, Roisin Grimes gathered on the grounds of the Conaty Centre in Cavan on Saturday morning to complete Phase 4 of the CCLD LEADER funded 'Tiny Forest' initiative.

With good weather on our side, the morning kicked off with an outdoor teaching and learning workshop on caring for a Miawalki Forest. Groups then visited the site to view the trees that were planted last February.

We are delighted to report that all of the trees survived and the site looks pretty good.

Tiny Forests are dense, native woodlands packed into small urban spaces measuring 25m². Based on the Miyawaki method it rapidly boosts biodiversity, fights climate change, and reconnects people with nature. The mix of native trees grow up to 5 times faster, providing significant environmental, health, and community benefits in as little as three years.

We thank everyone involved for their contribution to nature, people and communitues.
