What is curtailment and how does it affect you!

Curtailment in a wind farm is the deliberate, temporary reduction or shutdown of power generation ordered by grid operators, even when wind conditions allow for full production. It occurs primarily when the electrical grid is overloaded, cannot handle the incoming power, or to maintain system stability during low demand.

Shockingly Wind Farm operators get compensation for this “curtailment”

In 2024, the total value of wasted wind energy due to curtailment reached approximately €450 million.

Who pays for the this?
Any curtailment compensation paid to wind farms through these schemes is typically funded via the Public Service Obligation (PSO) levy on all electricity customers' bills.

Ireland are now THE highest electricity in Europe and that’s not going to change!! Twice what our neighbours France are paying!! Make it make sense!!

It’s been 13 years!!
13 years since Micheál Martin asked for the then government to legislate for the governance and regulation of large scale wind farms!!

Now listen to him contradicting himself just earlier this year as Taoiseach, the world of politics is a fickle place where the government is now choosing unrealistic targets over their own rural communities.

They’re still using those outdated 2006 guidelines to push through wind farms like Ballinlee, ignoring modern health and noise protections.

The government are stalling on updating the guidelines because it will affect their targets!!

✅ Watch this for a contradiction, listen to Michael Martin in 2013 literally telling us a different story

Are you affected by wind turbine noise?

Now is the time to act.

Write to the responsible EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall.

Did you know that the EU noise directive does not cover wind turbines at all?

At a conference in the European Parliament in March 2026, it became clear:

Current national measurement and calculation methods underestimate wind turbine noise.

This is especially true for low-frequency noise and infrasound, but also for audible sound.

Calculations and measurements must be based on modern scientific methods, e.g., methods developed by Professor Ken Mattsson, Uppsala University.

Citizens are currently left without real protection.

At the same time, the EU Commission has been aware of the problem for decades – without taking action.

One thing is clear:
If we don’t speak up now, this will continue.

Write to EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall today:
[email protected]

You could write something like:

“I live in a rural area and am affected by wind turbine noise… (write YOUR story here).
I urge the EU Commission to include wind turbine noise in the Environmental Noise Directive and ensure that regulations are based on up-to-date science and validated real measurements – calculations may be used in the planning phase, but only using modern methods such as those developed by Professor Ken Mattsson.”

MESSAGE FROM FRED LOGUE PhD MIEIA Cenv
"Financial barriers to environmental litigation are illegal, because protecting the environment is an important public interest.
The government now wants to make it super expensive (>€100,000) for ordinary people to go to court to protect the environment.
The Government is currently engaged in an extremely short consultation on proposed rules to cap legal costs when you go to court and hold the state to account for breaking environmental law. In effect they want you to pay hundreds of thousands of Euros should you choose to do this.
If you think this is wrong, make your views known by emailing [email protected] by 15 January.

The consultation document can be viewed here https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-climate-energy-and-the-environment/consultations/consultation-on-the-regulation-of-costs-payable-in-matters-prescribed-on-foot-of-section-295-of-the-planning-and-development-act-2024-scale-of-fees/.
Submissions could be brief and simply remind Government that the proposed cost regulations would fly in the face of and totally undermine it's obligations under the Aarhus convention and existing EU law, and are will inevitably be contested all the way to the European Court of Justice
