What is curtailment and how does it affect you!
Curtailment in a wind farm is the deliberate, temporary reduction or shutdown of power generation ordered by grid operators, even when wind conditions allow for full production. It occurs primarily when the electrical grid is overloaded, cannot handle the incoming power, or to maintain system stability during low demand.
Shockingly Wind Farm operators get compensation for this “curtailment”
In 2024, the total value of wasted wind energy due to curtailment reached approximately €450 million.
Who pays for the this?
Any curtailment compensation paid to wind farms through these schemes is typically funded via the Public Service Obligation (PSO) levy on all electricity customers' bills.
Ireland are now THE highest electricity in Europe and that’s not going to change!! Twice what our neighbours France are paying!! Make it make sense!!
