“In December 2024, Judge Andrew Cody at Portlaoise District Court found the relevant facts proven, but refused to convict 34 people who were driving over the 60km/h speed limit on a stretch of road at Clogheen, Monasterevin in Co Kildare.

In his decision, he criticised Kildare County Council for not reviewing the limit and said the prosecutions had “nothing to do with criminality and little to do with road safety and are driven not by safety, but by targets, statistics and finance.”

He said: “Prosecutions that are driven by targets, statistics and finance have no place in this courtroom and bring the administration of justice into disrepute.”

Mr Justice Cian Ferriter said the judge’s comments were “manifestly” in breach of fair procedures.

Every time we use the roads we can make safe choices.

Share the road to Zero.

64 people have lost their lives on Irish roads so far this year ⚠️

That is 3 more deaths than this time last year — a year which recorded the highest road death toll in over a decade.

We don’t like the direction we are heading in. Ireland is moving backwards when it comes to road safety.

Ireland has committed to Vision Zero, with a target of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2030 — from 144 deaths per year down to 72 or fewer annually. Yet at this point, we are not on track. In fact, we are moving away from that target, not towards it.

Behind every one of these numbers is a person 💔
And behind every death is a family and circle of loved ones left devastated. The impact is not short-term — it is lifelong. These deaths leave families carrying grief, trauma, and loss that never fully goes away.

What are our Ministers and Government doing to ensure this trajectory is reversed?

Because what is happening on our roads is unacceptable.

We need more than statements and commitments. We need immediate, decisive action — stronger enforcement, safer road design, properly resourced roads policing, and a genuine national focus on preventing further loss of life.

64 deaths are 64 too many.

Enough is enough 🚗
