Friends of Ennistymon Hospital

Friends of Ennistymon Hospital Fund Raising since 1984 for improvements to Ennistymon Community Hospital, Mini-Bus & Daycare Centre. This is due for completion in 2023.

Friends of Ennistymon Hospital was founded, by necessity, to defend and support Ennistymon Hospital, as it was then known back in 1984. In the mid eighties and earlier, there were serious cut backs being implemented, Mid-Western Health Board took the decision to close Ennistymon Hospital and transfer all the residents elsewhere in the region. Out of that decision, Friends of Ennistymon Hospital wa

s founded by a group of local active and concerned residents who met with the Executive of The Board and succeeded in having the decision stalled. The Friends of Ennistymon Hospital borrowed money to carry out the necessary repairs and improvements that The Mid-Western Health Board needed as part of the agreement to stall the closure. The Friends of Ennistymon Hospital in partnership with HSE MidWest have carried out many improvements at Ennistymon Community Hospital down through the years. Day Centre, being the largest project at the time, which is still in operation. The Friends purchased an 18 seater mini-bus back in 1999, to transport all the clients of the Day Centre from their homes to the Day Centre daily, during COVID-19, the mini-bus was engaged, with others, in delivering Dinners to the not so young residents in the community in the catchment area of Ennistymon Community Hospital. The latest Bus was purchased by the Friends, not the HSE in 2016. The Friends cover the cost of the Driver, again not the HSE responsibility. This is where donations and fundraising are so important to the Friends, to keep this service going. In 2012 The Friends embarked, in partnership with HSE Mid-West, the development of New Build en-suite rooms, in May 2014, the Friends committed to provide โ‚ฌ400,000.00 towards the developments, The Friends delivered. In 2015, Phase 1, consisting of 4 en-suite twin bedrooms, nurses station and additional staff services, 300 sq metres in total. Phase 2 followed 2 years later, consisting of 6 single & 1 two bedded en-suite bedrooms, a living room and multidisciplinary space. The Friends are working on a further 6 bedded en-suite, to which The Friends have committed โ‚ฌ200,000 towards the project. Donations and Fundraising by and for the Friends of Ennistymon Hospital are critical for these type of projects. The Friends of Ennistymon Hospital have formed a good working Partnership with HSE Mid-West and with the fantastic support of all the local and not so local people and groups who donate and fundraise, for the Friends, which make all this possible. We know you have a lot of choices when it comes to donating, and we are so grateful that you chose to donate to our cause. We have a lot of work to do, and your generous donation helps us get that important work done. We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tom Dowling, our much-loved retired bus driver for Ennistymon Daycare Centre.

Tom was more than just a driver to so many โ€” he was a kind and familiar face, always ready with a warm greeting and a friendly chat. He brought comfort and cheer to many people over the years, and his presence will be greatly missed.

On behalf of the Friends of Ennistymon Hospital, we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Marie, to Diane and Danny, and to all of Tomโ€™s extended family. Our thoughts are with you all at this very sad and difficult time.

Tom will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

May he rest in peace.

Former UK residents welcome to donate.

As families across Ireland prepare for the festive season, the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is appealing to people in Ennistymon and the wider Clare area to make time to donate blood and help safeguard supplies for Irish hospitals over Christmas and the New Year.

While most of us enjoy a well-earned break, hospital patients continue to rely on the kindness and generosity of blood donors. For them, this is not a holiday period โ€” their need for life-saving blood does not pause for Christmas.

Irish hospitals require a steady and reliable flow of blood every single day. Over the Christmas period, when donor availability traditionally dips, maintaining those supplies becomes even more important. This year, the need is particularly urgent, with hospitals experiencing a consistent rise in demand month after month.

Every donation is crucial. Over 67% of donated blood supports cancer patients, 27% is used in surgery and emergency care, and 6% helps mothers experiencing complications after childbirth and premature babies. Every drop donated saves lives in Ireland โ€” 100% of all blood collected is precious and saves lives in Ireland everyday.

โ€œIt is essential to build up our stock of all blood types to ensure continuity of supply to Irish hospitals,โ€ said Alex Oโ€™Connor, IBTS Recruitment Executive. โ€œDemand from Irish hospitals has not slowed down. Your donation can help ensure patients continue to get the blood they urgently need. Giving blood takes less than an hour and could mean the world to someone in need.โ€

Across Ireland, 3,000 donations are needed every week just to meet hospital requirements. Blood saves lives every day โ€” supporting cancer and leukaemia patients undergoing chemotherapy, individuals facing major surgery, mothers following difficult childbirth, and those injured in serious accidents. One single donation can help up to three people.

The IBTS is urging regular donors โ€” and welcoming new volunteers โ€” to attend the upcoming Ennistymon Blood Donation Clinics. Sharing an hour of your time this Christmas could make a life-changing difference for someone in an Irish hospital.

This Christmas, please consider giving blood โ€” it may be the most meaningful gift you give.
