COMMUNITY SPIRIT TO THE FORE AT CLONEA BEACH LITTER PICK

Abbeyside Scouts and Dungarvan Tidy Towns Working Together to Protect Our Local Environment

The spirit of community and service was very much in evidence on Sunday, 29th March, as scouts, cubs, and leaders from the 4th Waterford Abbeyside Scouts along with volunteers from Dungarvan Tidy Towns gathered for a litter pick at Clonea Beach.

Meeting at the public car park, a strong turnout ensured that significant progress was made over the course of the morning, with participants working from 10am to 12 noon to help keep our beach clean and welcoming.

The initiative reflected scouting’s long-standing ethos of contributing positively to the community and caring for the environment. Cubs and scouts wore their blue and yellow neckerchiefs with pride as they carried out the clean-up.

The event also served to support the ongoing and highly commendable work of Dungarvan Tidy Towns, whose dedication continues to enhance the local environment for residents and visitors alike. Efforts such as this play an important role in maintaining the area’s natural beauty and fostering a shared sense of pride.

With plenty of rubbish collected and safely removed, the event was widely regarded as a success, once again demonstrating that when the community comes together, a real difference can be made.

At the conclusion of the event a certificate and merit badge was awarded to each participant. Abbeyside Scouts would like to thank Dungarvan Tidy Towns for the invite to help them look after our little piece of the world.

BREDA BYRNE RIP
All involved with the 4th Waterford Abbeyside Scouts wish to express our deepest condolences to our leader, Kieran Byrne, on the passing of his mother, Breda.

Abbeyside Scouts are very fortunate to have Kieran and his son David as members. They are a wonderful example of the true spirit and value of Scouting.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them and all the Byrne family at this sad time.

4TH WATERFORD ABBEYSIDE HOST 150 SCOUTS
Nearly 150 Scouts from across county Waterford took part in the Scout Monopoly Run, which was held on Saturday, 1 February, at the 4th Waterford Abbeyside Scout Den. Abbeyside were well represented by some of our younger scouts who had a great time exploring their town and village on the sunniest day of 2026.

A Monopoly Run is a fun, fast-paced activity combining elements of orienteering with the board game Monopoly, where teams navigate a set route while completing challenges and earning points along the way.

The popular event saw Scout groups travel to Abbeyside for a day of activity, teamwork and outdoor fun. Sincere thanks are extended to all the Scouters who volunteered their time to ensure the event ran smoothly.

ABBEYSIDE SCOUTS AT DUNGARVAN POINT TO POINT
Some members of the 4th Waterford Abbeyside Scouts attended the recent Dungarvan Point-to-Point, where they volunteered in a litter-control role. Leaders in attendance included Beatrice Asmantaite, Kieran Byrne and Franny Flynn.

At the end of the race meeting, John Moran, Treasurer of Dungarvan Point-to-Point, made a generous donation to Abbeyside Scouts as a reward for their work collecting litter at the race meet. The funds will support the continued success of scouting in the village and help foster civic pride among the next generation. Photos: Fionnuala Larkin

Our Abbeyside cubs and scouts took some time out last night to visit our second home in Glenshelane , Back to basics with our cooking skills !! Boiled eggs !! So important for kids to be able be themselves and have fun doing the simple things in life , For some of our kids it will have been a new skill learned they love nothing better than going back home bursting with pride and looking to start doing some cooking for themselves and their family, Most of our leader group would have spent their scouting days in glenshelane and brings back some of the best memories, A great evening was had by all and of course finished off with a nice warm hot chocolate a must ❤️
