We are excited to announce that the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Ireland has concluded a memorandum of cooperation with the Kharkiv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre ХНАТОБ / СХІД OPERA and the Ukrainian NGO “Agency for Recovery and Development” Агенція відновлення та розвитку 🇺🇦🇮🇪

A key goal of this cooperation is to raise awareness of the Kharkiv National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Ireland and the wider European Union through a variety of initiatives. Our Centre will also seek additional institutional partners for the theatre in Ireland.

🎭 Kharkiv National Opera and Ballet Theatre is among Ukraine’s leading cultural institutions. Founded in 1925, it is Ukraine’s first state academic theatre. Today, during Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine and amid constant Russian attacks on Kharkiv region, the theatre continues to perform underground on a specially constructed “Loft Stage”, allowing it to stage world-class productions for the people of Kharkiv.

Our Head of Development, Oliver Loode, notes that initiating this cooperation with the Kharkiv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is both a privilege and responsibility for our Centre.

“Having recently attended one of the theatre’s new outstanding productions — the Ukrainian operatic classic “Eneida” — I am certain that Irish and in fact all European audiences deserve to know more about the theatre and the way it has adapted to war 💪

Kharkiv National Academic and Opera and Ballet Theatre is a powerful symbol of Ukraine’s cultural resilience, showing how art and humanity prevails over aggression,” he shared.

On Saturday, we celebrated 1 year of the UA Mriya Ukrainian Library in Galway 🎉

When the library was founded, it had only 20 children’s books. In just one year, the collection has grown to 200 books in Ukrainian for adults, teenagers, and children 📚

We are delighted that the library has become a space where the local Ukrainian community can find inspiration and stay connected with Ukraine.

We wish the UA Mriya Library continued growth, prosperity, and even more grateful readers discovering wonderful books 🇺🇦

Next Saturday the UA Mriya Ukrainian Library in Galway will celebrate its 1st anniversary 🎉

Founded last year in cooperation with UA Mriya Galway, the library has brought together the local Ukrainian community and become a place where people can support their national identity through language, literature, and culture.

“We feel at home here,” our readers often say 🇺🇦

We are proud that, thanks to our collection of Ukrainian books, they are able to strengthen and maintain a connection with their home country.

We encourage you to establish Ukrainian libraries in your communities. Literature is one of the most accessible and powerful ways to foster a sense of national identity in children and to sustain it in adolescents and adults 📚

We are very grateful to the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University (HURI) and personally to Oleh Kotsyuba, for their generous gift: a wonderful collection of Ukrainian books in English, which just have arrived to us from the USA 🇺🇦

Among them are Cassandra, a dramatic poem by Lesia Ukrainka; The City, a novel by one of the most prominent prose writers of the Ukrainian Executed Renaissance, Valerian Pidmohylny; prose by contemporary Ukrainian authors Taras Prokhasko,
Volodymyr Rafeenko, Oksana Lutsyshyna, and Olena Stiazhkina; as well as poetry by Iya Kiva, Marianna Kiyanovska, and others 📖

We hope that these books will help lay the foundation for future cooperation between our Centre and HURI, and that people in Ireland will have the opportunity to learn more about Ukraine through these outstanding works ✍️

What a warm and meaningful welcome we received last Wednesday in Westport ☘️

The local community joined us for a meeting with Ukrainian poet Halyna Kruk, in conversation with Galway-based journalist Natalya Korniyenko Наталя Корнієнко, discussing poetry and the reality of wartime 📖

The event lasted for two hours, and we only had to end it because the library was closing!

We’re very grateful to everyone who came, as well as to local Ukrainian activist Khrystyna Sodomora for helping us organise the event, and to Westport Library for hosting us.

If you missed the evening, stay tuned for updates — we’re planning more interesting events in Westport soon 🇺🇦

On Tuesday, we had the honour of hosting an event with the brilliant Ukrainian poet and educator Halyna Kruk at Galway University 🎓

It was a sincere and moving conversation about the experience of living and creating in wartime, about changes, challenges, and hopes.

We’re very grateful to Halyna, as well as to Clare-based author Greg Dinner, for his excellent moderation 🙌

The discussion was enriched by poetry readings in both Ukrainian and English. Dr Brendan Flynn, a lecturer at Galway University, and Irish poet Louis de Paor also read translations of Halyna’s poems into Irish ☘️

Events like this are very important in receiving firsthand testimony and helping understand the situation in Ukraine better 🇺🇦

We would like to introduce an inspiring initiative: Little Beetle Press, a creative children’s content agency founded by Ukrainian author Halyna Budilova and based in Ireland 🇺🇦☘️

The agency creates books, songs, cartoons, and other educational and entertaining content for children, their parents, guardians, and teachers. It brings together an
international team of writers, illustrators, musicians, and educators.

Little Beetle Press is a member of Publishing Ireland and Poetry Ireland, and collaborates with libraries, schools, and cultural organisations across the country.

Their work has been showcased at major events including London Book Fair, Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Listowel Writers’ Week, Féile na Bealtaine, and Culture Night Ireland 📚

At its heart, the agency focuses on creating imaginative and meaningful stories that support children through creativity, emotional development, and storytelling —
across print, digital, and audio formats, in both Ukrainian and English.

Featured titles include:

✨ A Magical Summer in Tír na nÓg — a touching story about two Ukrainian boys who flee war with their mother and discover a secret gateway to a magical land where time flows differently.

✨ New Beginnings Set (Happy Will Be the Days and Now My Life is New) — heartfelt stories exploring the emotions of moving to another country and hope.

✨ Sleep & Smile Set — featuring Sleepytime, My Little Squirrel! (modern Ukrainian lullabies) and A Very Very Angry Book, which helps children understand and express their emotions.

✨ Sips, the Magic Pony — a gentle and imaginative story about friendship, kindness, and the power of believing in magic, written by Tiernan Dolan, an Irish author, a volunteer, and a great friend of Ukraine.

✨ A Very Very Happy Book — the newest addition to the Emotional Explorers series, helping children build resilience and celebrate joy in every moment.

We encourage you to follow Little Beetle Press pages, explore their website, and discover the magical world they create 💫

We’re returning to Ireland from our mission in Ukraine and would like to share one more highlight from our trip: a meeting with Taras B*k, a board member of the NGO Agency for Recovery and Development / Агенція відновлення та розвитку, which is working on the strengthening of community self-governance and self-reliance for recovery and sustainable development during and after war 🇺🇦

Taras was very helpful in connecting us with key contacts across Ukraine, and we also had a very warm meeting with him in Kyiv.

We hope our organisations will have many opportunities to collaborate at different
levels, especially in light of Ireland’s EU Presidency this year.

To be continued…🙌

On Thursday, the Director of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Ireland, Natalya Korniyenko Наталя Корнієнко, had the honour of meeting with Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Culture, Bohdana Laiuk in Kyiv 🇺🇦

It was an insightful and supportive conversation focused on the popularisation of Ukrainian culture abroad, the role of cultural ambassadors across different countries and the strengthening of Ukrainian–Irish cultural ties.

They also discussed new opportunities for collaboration in promoting Ukrainian culture in Ireland, including cultural and art initiatives, literary exchanges, and public events.

Natalya presented Bohdana with a copy of Irish Pages: War in Europe, a collection featuring essays and poetry by Ukrainian, Irish, British, and American authors, reflecting on diverse experiences and perspectives of the Russian–Ukrainian war 📖

Such meetings play an important role in strengthening joint efforts to promote Ukrainian culture and literature abroad, as well as overcoming lingering colonial perceptions of Ukrainian culture internationally 🌍

We continue our mission of travelling over Ukraine to establish new partnerships for the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Ireland 🇺🇦🇮🇪

Oliver Loode, the Head of Development of our Centre, visited the cities of Odesa, Dnipro and Kharkiv, and met with representatives of the Odesa City Council / Одеська міська рада, Dnipro City Council / Дніпровська міська рада, Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture (DCCC), Pidgorodne Territorial Community / Підгородненська територіальна громада, Kharkiv State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre / ХНАТОБ / СХІД OPERA, and Kvitka Theatre in Kharkiv / Харківський академічний драматичний театр імені Г.Ф. Квітки-Основ'яненка.

All of these organisations expressed interest in collaborating with municipal authorities as well as cultural institutions in Ireland, in particular in the context of Ireland’s upcoming EU presidency 🇪🇺

Our meetings were very meaningful and inspiring. We are amazed by these people who, despite daily shelling — work, create, and develop for the benefit of Ukraine, and looking forward to working with them in the coming months to realise the ideas for collaboration that emerged 🤝
