We are delighted to announce that Catherine Connolly has accepted to become Patron of Women in Technology & Science Ireland.

This marks a hugely meaningful moment for WITS as we continue our work supporting, connecting and championing women across STEM in Ireland.

President Connolly has long been recognised for her commitment to equality, education, inclusion and public service - values that deeply align with the mission of WITS. Her support reflects the importance of creating spaces where women in STEM can thrive, lead and shape the future.

As an organisation built on community, collaboration and visibility, we are incredibly honoured to welcome President Connolly as Patron and look forward to this next chapter together.

WITS recommendation 🎧

The Hidden Biases Built Into Every AI System with Dr Joy Buolamwini, from I’ve Got Questions with Sinead Bovell.

Dr Joy Buolamwini is a computer scientist, AI researcher and founder of the Algorithmic Justice League. Her work has exposed how bias in artificial intelligence systems can reinforce inequality at scale and why the risks of AI go far beyond the headlines.

In this conversation, she explores how AI systems inherit human bias and why these biases are not just technical flaws, but deeper issues rooted in the data used to train them.

The episode also looks at the invisible ways AI is already shaping our lives, from algorithmic scoring and data brokers to biometric surveillance systems that most people don’t even realise they are part of.

A thoughtful listen on how technology, power and society intersect, and why it matters now more than ever. You can listen here:

We had the pleasure of coming together yesterday at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Dublin for our latest WITS meeting.

There’s something about being in the room together that you can’t quite replicate elsewhere. It gave us the space to pause, take stock of everything we’ve been building and have the kind of conversations that move things forward in a real, grounded way.

We reflected on the momentum so far this year, shared updates across the team and spent time shaping what’s next. It was focused, collaborative and full of energy - the kind of meeting you leave feeling clear and aligned.

More than anything, it was a reminder of the strength of this community. The willingness to show up, contribute and support one another is what continues to drive WITS forward.

A really valuable afternoon spent together.

The photographs coming back from Artemis II are beautiful and genuinely hard to look away from.

Earth eclipsing the Sun from lunar orbit. The far side of the Moon, closer than any human has seen it. Images that will define how a generation thinks about space.

Before the crew launched on April 1st, they spent two years studying photography. A considerable commitment on top of all their other training and responsibilities but essential for ensuring they got these once in a lifetime photos as close to perfect as possible.

Their instructors were Katrina Willoughby and Paul Reichert, graduates of RIT’s photographic sciences programme, who between them have trained nearly every active astronaut - nationally and internationally - over the past 25 years.

“Most people can use a camera and get a photo that is good enough,” Willoughby said. “But good enough isn’t what we’re after scientifically.”

The mission needed people who could think visually, communicate what they were seeing, understand light and composition in an environment no human eye has encountered before. Scientists who could also see like artists.

This is what STEAM actually looks like - not a slide in a conference deck, but the difference between a mission that documents history and one that captures the imagination of millions of people.

At Women in Technology and Science Ireland, we talk a lot about building careers in STEM that hold up. What Artemis II shows is that critical thinking, visual literacy, and knowing how to communicate what you see aren’t nice to have add ons to technical work. For this mission, they were critical.

The full RIT story is worth five minutes of your time. 🌕

We’re delighted to welcome Niamh O'Sullivan FCA as the new Treasurer of WITS Ireland! ⚡️

Niamh brings a strong background in finance and governance, along with experience working across global technology organisations. In her role at the Institute of Directors in Ireland, she leads across finance and operations, giving her a clear and practical perspective that will support WITS as we continue to grow.

She also has a strong interest in coaching and mentoring, and is committed to supporting women to progress and build confidence in their careers.

We’re very glad to have Niamh on board and look forward to working together.

Progress for women in tech is not guaranteed - and right now, there are clear signs of it slipping.

Our Chair, Jean O’Donnell, was recently featured in the Sunday Independent Business section, speaking to what she is seeing across the sector in Ireland. Her perspective reflects a shift many are beginning to notice, where structural changes are quietly impacting who is able to stay and progress in these roles.

As Jean shared, “By the age of 35, a significant proportion of the women who do decide to pursue a career in that sector step out.” This is not about a lack of talent or ambition. It is about the conditions surrounding that talent, particularly when flexibility is reduced and working environments no longer support the realities of people’s lives.

When these conditions change, the effect is not immediate, but it is consistent. Fewer women remain, fewer progress and over time, representation at senior levels weakens. What follows is not just a loss of diversity, but a loss of experience, perspective and leadership.

At WITS, this is where our focus remains. Encouraging entry into STEM is only one part of the picture. Sustaining careers, supporting progression and advocating for environments where women can continue to grow is what drives long-term change.

Because progress in this space does not hold on its own. It requires active, ongoing commitment - especially at the moments when it begins to slip.
