Focus Ireland

Focus Ireland Challenging homelessness. Changing lives. Learn how you can help at - linktr.ee/focusireland Focus Ireland was founded by Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy. Sr.

Stan was involved in a research project into the lives of homeless women in Dublin, when she realised the importance of involving people, who are, or have been directly affected by homelessness, in the development of homelessness services. In 1985, two years after the initial research Focus Point (now Focus Ireland) opened its doors in Eustace Street, Dublin. The organisation provided streetwork s

ervices to young people, advice, advocacy, information and help with finding a home as well as a warm welcoming place to meet and have a low-cost meal. Since its foundation Focus Ireland has continued to grow and its research and advocacy work ensures that the rights of people who are homeless remain on the political agenda. In addition to its Dublin projects, it now has services and housing projects across Ireland including in Waterford, Kilkenny, Cork, Sligo and Limerick.

Department of Housing figures for February 2026 show 17,308 people are homeless, including 5,457 children across 2,609 families.

This is up 196 on the previous month and 13% percent higher than a year ago, with child homelessness up 17% since February 2025.

Focus Ireland said the Government must ensure its forthcoming “Child and Family Homelessness Action Plan” will deliver faster exits from homelessness and practical supports that reduce the long-term harm of homelessness, especially for children.

The charity has also repeatedly warned that rental reforms which allow rents to reset to market levels will trap more families in homelessness unless HAP is urgently adjusted to reflect real rents.

Pat Dennigan, CEO of Focus Ireland, said: “We need to ensure that the welcome increase in social housing supply is being used effectively to reduce homelessness, particularly for long-term homeless families.

That means giving real priority in allocations to those who are most in need. This measure would shorten the time that children spend in emergency accommodation .”

For someone who has been entrenched in homelessness for a long time, life skills that we take for granted may have been missed out on for individuals supported by our services.

Our staff, like Patrice, work with these customers to prepare them for maintaining a tenancy i.e. paying bills, communicating with landlords, household cleanliness and cooking.

We have just launched an important new piece of research titled "Attitudes and Effective Communication on Modern Methods of Construction’ (MMC) - which was funded by

The report highlights that improving public understanding of MMC and its benefits is essential to help advance the wider use of MMC in order to speed up delivery of quality homes to ease the housing and homelessness crisis.

The number of people homeless has increased again, to 17,308 – a 12.5 per cent increase in a year and 196 more than a month previously.

The data, published today by the Department of Housing, show during the week of 16 to 22 February there were 11,851 adults and 5,457 children in emergency accommodation. The children are in 2,609 families.

This does not include people who are sofa-surfing, sharing overcrowded homes, in domestic violence refuges, rough-sleeping or stuck in direct provision centres despite having legal status to remain and unable to access housing.

In Dublin, where the crisis is most acute, there were 8,296 adults in homeless accommodation and 4,021 children.

Pat Dennigan, chief executive of Focus Ireland said: “It is heartbreaking to see homelessness stuck at a record level and to know that thousands of children are growing up without the security of a home. Homelessness is not a foregone conclusion. With the right policies we can turn this around.”
