When Sarah Barker's newborn son began choking in the middle of the night, everything changed in an instant.

Living in a rural area, with an ambulance still minutes away, Sarah knew she was her baby's only chance. Relying on the first aid and CPR skills she learned as a volunteer with the Irish Red Cross, Dundalk Branch, she stayed calm, followed her training, and kept going until her son started breathing again.

Sarah's story is a powerful reminder: first aid is a life skill. One that gives people the chance to act, help, and make a difference.

We’ve been loving the “Meet Me Monday” series from our Galway Red Cross Branch, where they share the stories of volunteers supporting the community 👏

Their stories have truly inspired us—and we thought, why not start sharing more of the amazing people behind the Irish Red Cross across the country?

This Friday, we’re doing just that 💬

We’ll be sharing three inspiring volunteer stories from different branches across Ireland—including Galway 😉

These are the faces behind the uniform. The people who give their time, care, and commitment to help others every day ❤️

We were back in Nepal this month meeting with participants of our Climate-Smart Livelihoods Programme.

This year, together with our partner Nepal Red Cross Society and in collaboration with Irish Aid and Fórsa trade union, we are supporting 500 households in remote areas of Tanahu District. By focusing on marginalised communities, the programme provides training and grants that help families scale their farms and secure their livelihoods against climate challenges.

Your ongoing support makes this vital work possible. 🤝

We couldn’t scroll past this nostalgic 90s trend without joining in ✨

No matter the decade, the Irish Red Cross is here ❤️

From building resilience to promoting International Humanitarian Law, our mission remains the same: to treat every person with dignity.

As armed conflict in Sudan enters its fourth year, civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence.

A new report from our colleagues at International Committee of the Red Cross documents the devastating civilian harm, including sexual violence, attacks affecting healthcare and damage to essential infrastructure.

These are not inevitable consequences of war. International Humanitarian Law exists to limit suffering in war – it must be respected by all.

📍 Sudan | For three years, families have been forced to leave, wait, and endure.

🔴 4 million forced to flee the country
🔴 More than 11,000 people reported missing
🔴 Health facilities damaged or destroyed

Lives have been uprooted. Families separated. Communities pushed to cope with less.

What does it mean to protect humanity, even in the midst of conflict?

At the Irish Red Cross Corn Adomnáin 2026, students from across the country came together to explore one powerful idea: that even in war, there are rules. International Humanitarian Law (IHL) exists to limit suffering, protect civilians, and uphold dignity when it matters most.

Through passion, debate, and critical thinking, these future leaders demonstrated not only their understanding of IHL, but their commitment to a more humane world 🌍

Watch the video to see their dedication in action and be inspired by the voices shaping the future of humanitarian values.

Following the escalation of violence in April 2023, the conflict in Sudan is now entering its fourth year. Across the country, ongoing insecurity has triggered one of the largest and fastest‑deteriorating humanitarian crises in the world.
Communities in Khartoum, Kordofan and the Darfur region continue to experience severe disruption to daily life, widespread displacement and increasing barriers to essential services.

Even before the conflict, Sudan faced significant humanitarian needs. At the start of 2023, 15.8 million people required assistance. Today, a staggering two out of every three Sudanese people – roughly 33.7 million individuals – now require urgent assistance.

Over 71% of Sudan’s population lives below the poverty line. Those most affected include women, children and people with disabilities, many of whom face extreme deprivation.

Despite the scale of the emergency, Sudan remains largely absent from international focus, and humanitarian resources continue to fall well short of the level required to meet overwhelming needs.

The Irish Red Cross, in collaboration with Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners, continues to monitor the situation in Sudan to best support the Sudanese Red Crescent.

Long after the fighting stops, anti-personnel mines remain. Silent threats that continue to harm civilians. Most tragically, children.

But there is hope. We've seen the power of global collective action through the Mine Ban Convention:

▪️Destroyed millions of stockpiled weapons.
▪️Provided critical, life-changing support to survivors.
▪️Restored contaminated land.

The progress is real, but the work is not done.

A mine-free world is possible. This , join us in saying no to these weapons and yes to a safer future.
