We're really looking forward to our lecture this Thursday 18 May when Jiri Papousek will be speaking on 'The diversity of growing alpines in the Czech garden'.

The talk will be held at 8pm in Kilternan Parish Centre, Enniskerry Road, Dublin, D18 PC58.

Jiri is a member of the Prague Rock Garden Club and the Scottish Rock Garden Club. He has 35 years experience in growing and exhibiting alpines at the Prague Rock Gardens show. His main interests are in cultivation – alpines, cushion plants, small daphnes, dwarf conifers; and design – crevice rock garden, troughs, tunnels with tufa wall, peat blocks.

The photos here give some idea of the different features (made with slate, limestone, tufa, granite, peat) that Jiri has made in his own garden. These allow him to grow a wide range of plants with quite different requirements. Join us on Thursday to glean tips and advice from an expert grower and experienced alpine plantsman.

Members, don't miss our AGM this Thursday, 19 January, at 8pm. We'll be holding it in Kilternan Hall, Enniskerry Road, D18 ET99. You should have received the Agenda and the 2023 Accounts with the recent newsletter mailout so if you have any questions or comments (or even if you don't!), do come along.

After the AGM business is done, we'll be very fortunate to hear from one of our long-standing members and a highly skilled alpine grower, Valerie Keegan, whose talk will be 'My Life in Alpines'. Members will know Val well for her skill, but also for her generosity with her plants and her knowledge. This promises to be an informative and enlightening talk.

Non-members are welcome too!

We're back live! This Thursday, 13 October, we're delighted to welcome Ger Van Den Beuken, who'll be talking to us about 'Cushion Plants'. Ger is from the Netherlands where he and his wife Mariet run a small nursery specialising in rare alpines. His interest in alpines started about 35 years ago, during his first treks in the mountains. He particularly focused on high alpine vegetation such as Saxifraga, Androsace, Dionysia and Daphne. However, growing alpines in the lowlands of the Netherlands presented many challenges.

Ger and Mariet have traveled extensively to many European countries and different parts of the European Alps, Sierra Nevada, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Central and N. Chile, USA, China, New Zealand and Turkey. Over several years he organised expeditions to Patagonia and he became more and more interested in the fascinating vegetation of Argentina and Chile.

As a lecturer Ger had featured on speaker tours in the US with NARGS, in Scotland with the SRGC, and in New Zealand with NZAGS. He has also given talks in the US, England, Germany, Scotland, Czech Republic, Belgium as well as for his own Dutch Society. We look forward to welcoming him to Dublin!

The lecture will take place from 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm at
St Brigid’s Parish Centre, St Brigid's Church Rd, Stillorgan, Dublin, A94 DD23
