Marking 30 years of the Gay Health Network (GHN), Out of the Strong, Came Forth Sweetness is a powerful visual art exhibition that explores the grief, joy, and resilience of Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community.
Join us for a fascinating and informal panel discussion exploring the evolution & experience of Dublin’s LGBTQ+ spaces. The conversation will trace the journey and spatial experience from emergent gay culture during criminalisation to early social gatherings in private homes, such as those of Michael MacLiammoir and Hilton Edwards. We’ll delve into the emergence of the first gay-friendly pubs like Bartley Dunnes, the nascent yet vibrant scene of the 70s & 80s with community hubs like the IGRM and Hirschfeld Centre, to and the rise of iconic club nights and venues in the 1990s. The discussion will also examine the successes and challenges facing contemporary nightlife spaces in the city like Mother.
Panellists to include:
John Hanley FRIAI, former Director of RKD Architects and member of the North Great George’s Street Preservation Society.
Clare Treacy, has a background in nursing, trade unionism & LGBT activism and events in Australia and Ireland.
Frank McDonald, former Environment Editor of the Irish Times and Author of “A Little History of the Future of Dublin” and “The Destruction of Dublin”.
Lisa Connell & Cormac Cashman, co-founders of Mother.
The panel will be chaired by Rob Curley MRIAI, Vice President and Programme Officer of the AAI & Director of Maremoto Architects.
