The Architecture of Softness

Do broken windows lead to murder? Can a bench cause crime? Are building that require occasional maintenance fueling social decay? Is permanently pristine architecture a problem, and what can designers learn from heavy metal, earth mosques and the Emir of Zazzau? In this expansive talk, writer and sculptor Phineas Harper will discuss the creative, expressive and ecological potential of fixing in architecture and beyond asking what happens when every act of repair is taken, not as correcting a failure, but as an opportunity for culture and improvement.

📍 Robert Emmett Room, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin
🎟️ Eventbrite

The AAI is thrilled to welcome Cotter & Naessens Architects as the next speaker in our Systems and Selves lecture series — an exploration of the qualitative significance of design in the public domain within the contemporary built environment. This series will present a curated selection of Irish and international case studies, highlighting the cooperative, experimental, and socially enriching potential of design.

With thanks to Trinity College Dublin for their valued collaboration on this series.

The archcitects will explore the reconstruction and repair of streets, the making of public rooms (where people may congregate) and "Assembly" as experienced in Ireland at Venice 2025.

Come join us this Saturday 4th October at 12pm for a two hour workshop with collage artist Sorcha O'Higgins at AAI @ The Bank at 130 Baggot Street Lower!

Tickets at link in bio

This engaging, creative activity is designed to challenge and inspire you. It's a chance to explore the medium of collage and experiment with an iterative process of playful arrangement. A few quick collage exercises will get us used to the materials - the feel of the paper, tearing and cutting it, selecting images and composing an artwork - before we embark on making a longer piece. No experience needed, and all materials will be provided.

Marking 30 years of the Gay Health Network (GHN), Out of the Strong, Came Forth Sweetness is a powerful visual art exhibition that explores the grief, joy, and resilience of Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community.

Join us for a fascinating and informal panel discussion exploring the evolution & experience of Dublin’s LGBTQ+ spaces. The conversation will trace the journey and spatial experience from emergent gay culture during criminalisation to early social gatherings in private homes, such as those of Michael MacLiammoir and Hilton Edwards. We’ll delve into the emergence of the first gay-friendly pubs like Bartley Dunnes, the nascent yet vibrant scene of the 70s & 80s with community hubs like the IGRM and Hirschfeld Centre, to and the rise of iconic club nights and venues in the 1990s. The discussion will also examine the successes and challenges facing contemporary nightlife spaces in the city like Mother.

Panellists to include:
John Hanley FRIAI, former Director of RKD Architects and member of the North Great George’s Street Preservation Society.
Clare Treacy, has a background in nursing, trade unionism & LGBT activism and events in Australia and Ireland.
Frank McDonald, former Environment Editor of the Irish Times and Author of “A Little History of the Future of Dublin” and “The Destruction of Dublin”.
