We are delighted to see the issues facing veterinary nurses highlighted once again, this time in Irish Farmers Journal following our recent Oireachtas meeting.

This discussion is an important step towards addressing concerns around professional regulation, workplace standards, reporting mechanisms, and the wellbeing of veterinary nurses across Ireland.

We would like to sincerely thank Aindrias Moynihan Fianna Fáil, Chair of the Agriculture Committee, for highlighting last Wednesday's discussion and for his commitment to following up with the VCI on the issues raised.

We are grateful to the Committee members who provided veterinary nurses with a platform to speak openly about the challenges facing our profession, the impact on animal welfare, and the need for greater accountability and support within the sector.

Importantly, this is not simply about identifying problems. We welcome the opportunity to be part of constructive, solution focused discussions and to work collaboratively with policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders to achieve meaningful and lasting improvements for veterinary nurses, veterinary teams, and the animals entrusted to our care.

Our chairperson Kellie, Secretary Mark and Treasurer Sarah went to the Joint Oireachtais Committee yesterday in relation to the issues of recruitment and retention of Veterinary Nursing.

Kellie Fagan, chair of the Irish Veterinary Nurses Association, said a recent survey found that nearly 76% of veterinary nurses are either "considering leaving, unsure about remaining, or planning to leave the profession altogether".

"The main reasons are low pay, burnout, poor work life balance, and limited career progression," she said.
