Almost 200 Irish Jesuits are engaged in a wide range of work both at home and throughout the world. We are also joined in our work by laymen and women, both friends and colleagues. We are united by our faith in a God who wants all men and women to be truly free and live as Children of God.

In the Summer 2026 issue of Studies, Tobias Winright, Professor of Moral Theology at St Patrick's Pontifical University, explores how the "collapse of restraint" in present-day wars, which has led to high casualty rates among the most vulnerable civilians, provides a compelling argument for reclaiming the just war moral tradition rather than abandoning it.

Robert W. McChesney SJ is author of the award-winning book The Soul Also Keeps the Score: A Trauma‑Informed Companion to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola ». In it, he reframes Ignatian spirituality through contemporary understandings of trauma and pastoral care – areas he has worked in for over 30 years.

On a recent visit to Ireland, he spoke with Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications and explained to her his belief that the Spiritual Exercises », written by St Ignatius, can be powerfully healing, particularly since they emerged from his serious mental, physical and spiritual breakdown and subsequent recovery, in Manresa, Spain.

Acknowledging the importance of the top-selling book The Body Keeps the Score », Fr. Mc Chesney argues that in life, traumatic or painful experiences are often held not only by the body but also by the soul. And so people may not only suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) but also ‘moral injury and spiritual injury’.

He says the Exercises of St Ignatius, along with practices such as praying the examen prayer », discernment, imaginative prayer, confession, and one-to-one spiritual direction, can foster embodied resilience, ethical responsibility, and communal repair.

He explains how this bridging of classical Jesuit practices and trauma‑informed care offers a compassionate, practical guide for retreat directors, spiritual directors, and communities working with survivors, inviting the church to hold suffering with dignity while cultivating hope, agency, and spiritual formation attentive to wounded souls.

Irish Jesuit Fr. Bernard McGuckian SJ speaks with Pat Coyle about the making of his four-part EWTN documentary, The Kingship of Christ », which examines the biblical origins and meaning of Christ’s kingship.

A central part of the discussion focuses on Martha de Noya, a 19th-century French Catholic woman whom Fr. McGuckian discovered during his research. She believed she had been entrusted by God with the mission of promoting recognition of Jesus Christ’s sovereign reign over all creation. She dedicated much of her life to seeking public acknowledgement of Christ’s universal kingship.

Reflecting on his research, Fr. McGuckian observes that some of the most significant and demanding work in the history of the Church has often been undertaken by “women of profound faith.”

He also recalls discovering a church in Rome whose name was closely connected to the theme of Christ’s kingship, which he took as an encouraging sign that the documentary was on the right track. He further recounts the story of an Irish cathedral that was renovated in the 1930s and dedicated by the Pope of the time to Christ the King, making it the first cathedral in the world to bear that dedication. Remarkably, just two days after its consecration, the Second World War began.

Fr. Bernard McGuckian SJ uncovers the remarkable story behind Christ the King and the woman who championed His universal reign.
