Our story so far...

Noreen Armstrong was a Mother, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Sister-in-law, Mother-in-law, Nanny, Aunt and friend to so many people. Full of life and positivity and with a laugh that made you smile. She loved the outdoors, she was part of a walking club, a regular in her Irish set dancing classes and was a dab hand at the accordion. She sadly passed away too soon in 2009 at the age of 54 after a few short years battling breast cancer. Ever the optimist and always thinking hers was but a small battle compared to what others have gone through - she touched the lives of all who knew her. The grief was overwhelming, and still is truth be told, but some good needed to come from this heartache. In 2016, her daughter Shiona felt it was time to remember her Mum in a very real way. She rallied a team around her, made up of Shiona’s cousin Maeve, her sister-in-law Michelle and close family friends Aoife and Theresa. And so the very first ‘Noreen Armstrong Memorial Ladies Lunch’ was held. The aim was to raise €5,000 for the Breast Cancer Care & Research Unit in St. Vincent’s Foundation, Dublin. This was hospital that treated Noreen until her passing. The event was a huge success and saw us raise over €10,000. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of family and friends who supported the cause. Two years on and we want to do more - our aim this year is to focus on Breast Cancer Patient Care for St. Vincent’s University Hospital. One vivid memory Shiona has of chatting with her mum, was Noreen recalling that, although the inevitable first question upon diagnosis was “will I survive”, her second question to the doctor was “will I lose my hair”? Coming to terms with the diagnosis of breast cancer is a personal journey for all those who have gone through it...it can take it’s toll on both the body and mind...the physical effects, like losing your hair, some would say is one of the more distressing parts of the journey. This year we want to show even more support for those in cancer care. Our aim is to raise enough funds to provide St. Vincent’s University Hospital with a Scalp Cooling Therapy Unit (Cold Cap unit). John Hickey, Chief Executive of St. Vincent’s Foundation, supports this cause fully, “While Cold Cap Therapy is not suitable for all oncology patients, it is for many. Those for whom it is suitable benefit from avoidance or reduction in hair loss associated with chemotherapy. This is an important facet of patient care. Hair loss is distressing and is particularly relevant to patients being treated for breast cancer”. The cost of a Scalp Cooling Therapy Unit will be €15,000 - a big jump from our inaugural event but we have every faith and determination that we will achieve our goal with the most appreciated support you can imagine. Details of the event itself will be announced on our page as the months move closer and we will also hold raffles and have a donations page for those wishing to support the cause. Our final thought is for our dear Noreen, who’s 9th anniversary it will be on Nov 3rd 2018 - the day of our event. We know she is very proud of all her family and friends and loved us all very much and she would be very proud of the amazing support for all those going through Breast Cancer Care.
