The History Club’s Next Public Lecture is on: -

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 15th 2026 IN THE FOXROCK PASTORAL CENTRE @ 8.00 P.M.
TOPIC – THE SEAPOINT TRAGEDY

At about 7pm on the 30th of June 1890, James O'Connor, a prominent journalist with the United Irishman newspaper, was chairing a meeting of a charity he was supporting.

Meanwhile, at his home at 1 Seapoint Avenue, some of his children went to gather mussels from a nearby pond. Unfortunately, after eating the mussels, the family rapidly became unwell. When James arrived home at about 9 o'clock, he was met by a scene of utter devastation.
This talk will:-
Detail the story of the O'Connor family tragedy,
Discuss mussel poisoning and its treatment at the time versus today,
Detail the laboratory investigations by Dr. Edmond McWeeney and Sir Charles Cameron,
Tell some of the side stories of the survivors.
Peadar McGing, is a Retired Principal Clinical Biochemist ex: Mater Misericordiae University hospital. Holds a 1973 - 1977 Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biochemistry @ University College Cork. With a robust skill set that includes Strategy, Management, Microsoft Office, Research, Customer Service and more.

News from Irish Water on scheduled upgrade works in the Cherrywood area

Homes and businesses in the Cherrywood area of south County Dublin are set to benefit from a more secure and resilient water supply as Irish Water begin work to upgrade the local water network.

This €2.6 million investment will strengthen the water network, increase capacity and improve resilience to support both existing customers and the future growth planned for the area. As Cherrywood continues to develop, these upgrades will help ensure local families, businesses and future communities have the reliable water services they need for years to come.

A short section of Brides Glen Road, R116, between Mullinastill Road and the M50, will be closed for the duration of the project. Irish Water will work to keep disruption to a minimum and will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Irish Water by GMC Utilities Ltd. and are expected to be completed in early 2027.

To help local animals and birds, place a shallow dish or heavy saucer filled with fresh water on the ground or a low wall. Add stones or twigs inside the container so bees, frogs, and small mammals can easily climb out if they slip in.
Setup Tips
Choose shallow containers: Use upturned dustbin lids, plant pot saucers, or shallow bowls.
Add an escape ramp: Put pebbles, gravel, or a small stick inside so insects and small creatures do not drown.
Place near cover: Set ground bowls near shrubs or trees so birds and hedgehogs feel safe from predators.
Maintenance
Change daily: Empty and refill the water every day to keep it fresh and prevent mosquitoes.
Clean regularly: Wash the dish weekly with a mild, pet-safe disinfectant or a 1:9 vinegar-to-water solution, then rinse well.

Energy Upgrade works have been approved for Cabinteely Library. Facilitating these essential works requires the library to close for their duration. We regret the inconvenience caused by this closure.


On re-opening, Cabinteely Library will have:

· A full rewire of the building, new fire and intruder alarm systems

· New solar panels, a heat pump, more efficient radiators & attic insulation

· Thanks to a Small Scale Capital Works Grant from the Dept. of Rural and Community Development & the Gaeltacht: accessible automatic doors & porch for easier access



When is the library closing?

Mon 10 August, subject to contractor & equipment availability

When will the library re-open?

Estimated November 2026, subject to contractors and utilities providers

The counties at greatest risk of burglary have been revealed, with a clear national divide emerging in terms of house break-ins.

The highest burglary rates in Ireland last year were all along the east coast, with levels over 50pc above the national average recorded in Dublin, Wicklow and Louth.

Burglaries in the capital were up marginally overall last year, with 3,788 cases reported – eight more than in 2024. 

Large increases were recorded in certain areas, including Cabinteely, Shankill and Swords. In contrast, there were noticeable reductions in some areas, including Howth, the Liberties and Santry.

Leaving water in your garden is one of the most effective ways to support local birds for both drinking and preening. However, recent 2026 disease containment guidelines from BirdWatch Ireland stress that you must change the water daily to stop the spread of fatal avian parasites.
Proper Setup Techniques
Keep it shallow: Use a container that is only 1 to 2 inches deep so small birds do not drown.
Add perches: Place rough stones or twigs inside deeper dishes to give birds a safe place to stand.
Ensure traction: Stick to rough-surfaced containers like terracotta or concrete so birds can grip easily.

Repurpose items: Use everyday objects like plant saucers, shallow kitchen pans, or inverted bin lids.
Strategic Placement
Provide shade: Position the dish out of direct sunlight to keep the water from overheating.
Protect from predators: Keep the water source away from low bushes where cats can hide and ambush birds.
Stay elevated: Consider putting the dish on a sturdy table or pedestal to give birds a clear line of sight.
