Merchants Quay Ireland is a national voluntary organization that helps people who are dealing with homelessness and those caught in addiction. We provide frontline services, practical support, pathways towards recovery, and innovative responses to the issues of drug use and homelessness in Ireland. We believe in a society where no one has to face homelessness or addiction alone and where everyone has the support they need to reduce the harm caused by homelessness and addiction and to build a better life—an inclusive society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Our mission is to provide accessible, high-quality, and effective services to people experiencing homelessness and addiction in Ireland, meeting their complex needs in a non-judgmental and compassionate way.

Jack's still working through the programme at High Park, and he'll tell you honestly, it's not easy. But he's not the same person who was hiding on O'Connell Street anymore. He knows he still has a road ahead of him, better than anyone does. But for the first time, he's walking it with his whole life still in front of him, and people around him who genuinely believe he'll get there.

"Mam's 47 years of age, she's in recovery. If she can do it, I can do it." Her recovery gave him a reason to believe change was possible in the first place. Now, week by week, he's proving it to himself too.

This kind of progress doesn't happen on its own. It takes time, patience, and people willing to fund it- people like you.

In HighPark, Chef Wayne spends two weeks with every client. They take turns running the kitchen. They learn hygiene, food storage, and the quiet pride of cooking something others enjoy.

Our counsellors sit with clients through the toughest conversations. They help work through years of pain. One honest talk at a time.

When words aren't enough, our therapists step in. They use art, music, and gardening.

At 17, Jack had nowhere left to call home. Only the streets of Dublin. Doorways became his bedroom. Sleep never came easy. Once, his shoes were stolen right off his feet while he lay there.

One day on O'Connell Street, some old friends spotted him. They were on their way to a gig. He couldn't duck away. "What's wrong? You look awful," they asked. They were confused by the sleeping bag around his neck. "I was so embarrassed. We would have been mates back home, and here I was running into them with a sleeping bag around my neck."

Not long after, Jack found his way to High Park. It wasn't easy. But slowly, things started to shift. "Yeah, it's hard. But I'm trying to change myself for the better. And even over a few weeks, I can feel myself changing. The programme is really working."

Helen is the Senior Addiction Counsellor at our High Park residential service. With more than 2 decades at MQI, she has seen it all. She's seen addiction change over the years too, and it often comes with harder mental health struggles now. She's also seen how hard it can be for women to get into recovery. How the housing crisis can put someone's recovery at risk even after they've done the hard work.

"If I could get you to like yourself here. People that like themselves treat themselves well. People that hate themselves hurt themselves."💜

Her approach is simple: staff and clients meet as equals. They eat together, take breaks together, even shovel dirt in the garden together. For clients who've been failed by punitive systems before, that flat structure can make all the difference.

High Park is our 14-week residential programme. It helps clients move from challenging times towards a life they can call their own.

The first few weeks are for settling in. Clients process what's happened and start to understand what's behind their addiction, not just the symptoms. From there, they build real skills. Cooking, laundry, basic self-care, often for the very first time. They learn to speak up for themselves and set healthy boundaries. Eventually, they take over running the house as a group.

Creative therapies run alongside it all too. Growing vegetables, making art, playing music together. Small things that quietly rebuild the confidence addiction and isolation had worn away. And group therapy ties it together.

"For a lot of people who walk through the doors at Riverbank, it's the first place in a long time where someone asks, "How are you?" And means it.

Before anything else can happen, people need the basics. A warm meal. A shower. Somewhere safe to rest without watching over their shoulder. Homelessness takes these things away. That's what Riverbank gives people. Nothing fancy. Just a team that shows up, every single day, and cares.
