We very recently took in a 2 year old Syrian hamster. Given his age, he was to become a permanent resident here at Hamster Info Ireland.

On collection, we noticed his nails were some of the longest we had ever seen. We called him Edward Scissorhands as a nod to the season and those poor nails.
Edward’s nails were quickly dealt with since he was such a lovely placid boy.

On closer inspection of his body, however, we noticed his abdomen was very swollen and hard to the touch. This is a very concerning symptom that can’t be ignored in hamsters of any age, so we made an appointment with Dr Bobby.
That appointment happened today: Dr Bobby did an ultrasound on Edward while he was awake since he was so well behaved.

Unfortunately, little Edward’s prognosis wasn’t a good one: he had a very large mass attached to his kidney. After Bobby explained everything, we knew the kindest thing we could do was have Edward put to sleep.

We are grateful that we had the opportunity to make Edward comfortable in his last days and were able to prevent further suffering, but we’re so sad his retirement story couldn’t be a happier one. Rest easy little one.

Two of our hammies found their forever homes at the weekend.

Sylvester, our longhaired boy, made his journey home on Saturday. Our team found it so funny that his adopter came to collect him and hadn't even seen what he looked like! 😅😆 It's really heartwarming when applicants want to adopt purely to give a hamster in need a second chance. 🥹🥰 Sylvester is already settling in really well. We wish him and his new family all the best!

On Sunday, Rosa, who arrived at the rescue 6 months ago, finally had her lucky day and got to go home! 🏠 Her new owner has adopted from us previously, so we know this little lady will have such a great life! She truly deserves it! 🥰

We've been really busy the past few weeks with lots of adoptions taking place! 🐹

Russian dwarf Bowser, who was originally named Peach, until we found out she was actually a he, was lucky enough to find a wonderful new home and now has a huge enclosure to explore! 😄

Peter - the dad of our Peter Pan themed litter - found his forever home too. It's still early days with his new family but we know with time and patience he will soon settle in. We're so glad he has a home to call his own after such a bumpy start in life. 🥺

Our gorgeous Luigi had lots of applications, although it took a while to find the right fit. Robos can be tricky to rehome as they often have a flighty nature, so we're thrilled Luigi eventually found the perfect forever family. Who could say no to that face?! 🤩

Just this weekend we've had double adoptions of two baby dwarf hamsters who were snapped up even before their adoption profiles were made! 😅 Princess, adopted by our trustee Sophie, and her sister Duchess can now both live their best lives in their new homes. Yay! 🥰

We're so grateful to all our adopters! Adopting not only gives a second chance to a hamster in need of a home, it also frees up a space in rescue for us to help the next hamster.

Sylvester is a little boy who would prefer a home he can settle into at his own pace. He is a real character and loves organising his enclosure with enrichment materials such as leaves and different substrates. He also adores his sand bath and his favourite treat is peanuts.

We were lucky enough to have three of our rescue hamsters travel to their forever homes within the past few days!

First to go was Syrian hamster Mario, who was surrendered to us after his owner was no longer able to care for him. Mario had an amazing enclosure setup that his owner was more than happy to donate to ensure his hamster would have a great life. Unsurprisingly, it didn't take long for Mario to be snapped up! We're really happy for this little guy who deserves the very best!

Ham Solo - now known as Ham Solo Hamborghini! - went to his forever home at the weekend. He now lives with the most lovely family who no doubt love him to pieces! We're so glad to see him settling in so well already.

Wendy, the mum of our recent litter that tragically had to be put to sleep, was also adopted this weekend by our trustee Steph! We're so happy that Wendy has found a home to call her own!

Getting ready for day 2

We have six lovely Syrian hamsters looking for homes of their own: Nana, Peter, Wendy, Stuart, Rosa and Ham-Solo.

Syrians have slightly different care requirements to dwarf hamsters. They need our largest enclosures, with a minimum internal floor space of 5,000 sq cm. They also need large wheels of at least 28cm in diameter. Hides and tunnels should have entrances at least 7cm wide, and they need plenty of deep bedding for digging and burrowing. We recommend at least 30cm of compressed substrate, although more is always better!

These six little ones are full of character and we'd love to see them move on to caring forever homes where they can thrive and be spoiled as they deserve. 🥰🥰🥰
