Reach Deaf Services is currently seeking a General Maintenance person to join Property and Facilities team. The role will involve unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work throughout the buildings on Reach Deaf Services grounds.

This role will assist with tasks as part of the maintenance department and will ensure that records are maintained of works undertaken.

The Successful applicant will also demonstrate a basic knowledge of workshop health and safety procedures, assist other colleagues as required and assist higher grade team members on new projects and repairs.

The cost of each class will be at the discounted rate of 5 euro per class for non-members.

As we come to the end of Irish Sign Language Awareness Week 2026 this Sunday, it was great to see so many different events and activities taking place throughout the week.

Here at Reach Deaf Services, we had some events of our own. We held our monthly ISL Catch-Up and gave a presentation about the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and the Deaf Flag. We also held our ISL Awards, celebrating our staff members who received their Level 1 and Level 2 Irish Sign Language certificates, also had a very special surprise for Frankie Berry, who is retiring after 40 years at Reach Deaf Services. We celebrated Frankie by hosting a special “This Is Your Life” event to recognise her incredible contribution over the years.

We also launched our own ISL Awareness training, “Beyond the Surface.” The aim of this training is to go beyond basic Deaf Awareness by exploring Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community in greater depth. This was led by ISL Team, the training was developed and provided by Deaf staff

A huge thank you to the ISL Team for organising and contributing to all the wonderful events throughout the week.

Major Milestone for The CODA Project at University College Cork thrilled to announce that Noel O'Connell, PhD Jemina Napier paper, "A qualitative literature review of how hearing codas navigate deafness stigma," is published in the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education!

What does this article explore?
Approximately 90% to 95% of children born to Deaf parents are hearing. Despite international mandates, Codas frequently remain a "hidden minority" whose specific structural and emotional needs are ignored by family policies. This research reviews how "courtesy stigma" (stigma-by-association), public language shaming, and premature parentification impact Coda youth across familial, educational, and public spaces. Crucially, it highlights how Codas leverage their bilingual and bicultural heritage to actively build resilience and personal agency.

This research was funded by Research Ireland under the SFI-IRC Pathway programme (Grant Number: 22/PATH/A/0023)

The film features three Deaf couples sharing their remarkable love stories - a 50 year forbidden romance that blossomed against the backdrop of the Troubles, a Deaf boxer and his hearing partner facing an impossible decision, and a same s*x couple navigating the joys and challenges of raising Deaf and hearing daughters. This collection of cinematic love letters offers a beautiful insight into the lives of Deaf people and celebrates the power of enduring love.
