🪧 DAY 2 of our digital strike!

We are starting to see movement from Dublin City Council but no concrete response to our demands.

Please help us keep the pressure on DCC by calling or emailing them today! Script: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZGaVbhIjW7if_Mgo71bw67bvbQjKjiEM9qVdKb9iyno/

🚨 URGENT ACTION NEEDED 🚨

We are calling on all members and supporters to call / email Dublin City Council immediately and demand that DCC:
1. Meet our proposals to purchase our member’s home under the tenant-in-situ scheme
OR
2. Provide an adequate alternative that meets the family’s accessibility needs before 1st June.

Our member’s landlord is selling the home her and her family have lived in for 5 years. At the moment, DCC have declined to purchase the house despite the threat of homelessness to this family - this is UNACCEPTABLE.

We worked in good faith with DCC so far but they are neglecting their responsibilities & failing to act. They have the resources, and we know similar tenant in-situ cases have been acted on successfully. This should be no different.

Please help us by calling or emailing the Council. Demand DCC take responsibility and prevent this eviction!

🚨Eviction and Dublin City Council failure🚨

One of our members is facing eviction on 1st June. The landlord is selling her home where she has lived with her two children for over five years. While the landlord offered to sell the house to Dublin City Council under the tenant-in-situ scheme, DCC have declined - leaving the woman and her family no choice but to overhold or be made homeless.

We will be supporting our member in staying in the property after the eviction notice expires, as well as challenging DCC to reverse their decision. The scheme is there to prevent homelessness and it's a disgrace not to use it in cases like these!

To help us and this person facing homelessness, please get in contact or join CATU here: www.catuireland.org/join

Keep an eye on this page for more on how to join us in demanding DCC re-engage and prevent this family from being evicted.

📢 Dept Of Housing Occupied, Grounds Locked Down📢

In opposition to the recent government decision to lift the ban on evictions, activists from CATU and beyond today held a rally at the Spire in Dublin. It was followed by a march on the Department of Housing at Customs Quay.

Activists are now occupying the inside of the Department whilst supporters are outside following a Garda cordoning of the building.

We are calling for:

• Eviction ban to be reinstated
• Building public housing
• Resist eviction attempts

CATU Ireland (Artane/Coolock, Donaghmede/Kilbarrack and Edenmore/Baldoyle branches) are joining with N.D.B. Housing Crisis Community to organise the annual Christmas party for families in emergency accommodation and those we know to be struggling in our community. We would like to help take some of the stress and expense of Christmas from these families and put a smile on the faces of the children and organise a fun day for them, the Christmas party is scheduled for 18th December this year, we would ideally like donations by 7th December if possible. If you're in a position to donate to this event please contact Jean or you can donate to our go-fund me page also. We would like to thank you for your support.

The rezoning of the St. John Vianney church lands by Ardlea Road is shown below. This would move it from community and social infrastructure to Institutional lands with no guarantee of what might be built there.

This land was gifted to the community originally, and to have it taken away without any community led plan on the kind of development is a shame. Does Dublin need more expensive build to rent apartments when we lack genuinely public housing or community amenities?

Councilors say it is important you submit your views on this proposal before 14th February.

You can do this at https://www.dublincity.ie/residential/planning/strategic-planning/dublin-city-development-plan/development-plan-2022-2028 or in writing to Development Plan Team, Planning and Property Development Department, Dublin City Council, Wood Quay, Dublin 8.

But this site is confusing and inaccessible for most people!

Regardless of if the rezoning is accepted or not, our message as a union is clear. No sod should be turned without a community led plan for this or any other sites in the city! Join CATU to build that platform and the power for us to have our say.

You can join at catuireland.org/join or text/Whatsapp/call 0852627982 to find out more.

Statement: Community Anti-eviction protest, 1pm, Monday the 7th, going from St Peters Church to 292 North Circular Road to the home of the tenants affected.

Two tenants, Clara & Aideen are being threatened with eviction on Monday the 7th of February. They need your support.

In 2021 their landlord announced he wanted to sell their home from under them. He served them an eviction notice, without putting the property on the market. After an anxious search and facing a winter with the Covid19 Omicron variant, the tenants could not find a suitable, affordable home as an alternative.

After months of silence from their landlord, with days to go till the eviction date, the landlord finally replied aggressively sending 20+ calls and streams of messages to the two women.

The tenants currently feel unsafe and have asked for communication to occur through their union - CATU Ireland - The Community Action Tenants Union of Ireland. They have additionally outlined that

--The landlord cannot forcefully remove them without going through the correct legal channels (RTB & Courts) which he has not done thus far
--The landlord does not need a vacant position to sell. He can leave them ‘in SITU’ while selling the property. Securing themselves in their home
--If the landlord refuses to leave them in SITU, he must offer a suitable alternatives for both tenants.

The tenants reiterate, that the threat of eviction and the aggressive manner in which the landlord is conducting himself has created great stress and anxiety for them.

The tenants also know that ultimately the landlord is motivated by profit and that their housing security comes before this.

While organising with CATU in Phibsboro the tenants have seen widespread support for them and widespread disgust at the actions of the landlord. Any further harassment or any eviction attempt will be strongly resisted by the community.

Out chatting to residents around Artane about the proposed rezoning of St. John Vianney church grounds.

Would you like it to be a community space? Public housing? Get in touch and share your thoughts.

What's clear is that communities find it hard to have their voices heard in the planning process. We need to be organised to have a platform!
