Vincent de Paul (SVP) is a direct service non-profit organisation whose work primarily involves person-to-person contact with people who have a variety of needs. In addition to direct assistance, we try to promote self-sufficiency, enabling people to help themselves. Any assistance offered by the Society is given in a non-judgemental spirit of compassion, based on the need of the individual or family. We do much more than just address financial hardship; we visit the sick, the poor, the lonely and the imprisoned to form a unique network of social concern. Our members give through working for social justice and the creation of a more just and caring nation.

Education can help break the cycle of poverty. But financial barriers can make it harder for children and young people to get the most from their education.

Niamh Dalziel, SVP Social Justice Research and Policy Officer, explains why removing those barriers is a key part of SVP’s Budget 2027 proposals.

SVP is calling for measures including:

A double Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance payment for eligible students entering Transition Year

School-based digital device loan schemes

Increased capitation funding to help schools meet their running costs and reduce reliance on voluntary contributions and fundraising

The extension of the free hot school meals programme to post-primary schools

Reform of SUSI grants and income thresholds in line with the cost of living and earnings

Increased financial support for apprentices to help cover accommodation, travel and food costs during training

These measures could reduce the financial barriers facing families, help schools focus their resources on education and give more young people the support they need to stay in education and complete their qualifications.

Members of SVP from across the North Region gathered at All Saints’ Church for a special Mass celebrating the life and legacy of St Vincent de Paul and the dedication of SVP members who continue his mission of service in their local communities. We were delighted to welcome Anne Irwin, Regional President for the North Region, to her first Feast Day Mass in the role.

Thank you to Fr Perry Gildea CM for celebrating the Mass and to Regional Volunteer Ambassador Malachi Cush for his beautiful singing throughout the celebration. It was a lovely opportunity for members to come together and celebrate the spirit of St Vincent de Paul.

More than 700 years of volunteering were celebrated in one room as over 150 Vincent’s volunteers and staff from across the North Region recently came together for a volunteer appreciation event. Special recognition was given to volunteers who have dedicated more than 10 years of service each to their local Vincent’s shop. There was plenty of fun along the way too, including a ‘Price Is Right’ fashion show celebrating 50 years of Vincent’s. A huge thank you to every Vincent’s volunteer for everything you give throughout the year. Your time and energy make a real difference.
