The group is open to disabled people, their families and carers as well as support groups and organisations. The aim of the group is to promote the inclusion and participation of disabled people, support us to become active in the community and create awareness of the issues affecting our lives. Our work is informed by the issues of concern to members of the group and the wider community. It is un
derpinned by an understanding of the social model of disability. This model says that disability is caused by the way society is organised, rather than by a person's impairment (conditation) or difference. It looks at ways of removing barriers that restrict life choices. The group also works from a disability equality perspective. This is a belief that disabled people/people with disabilities should enjoy equal rights and opportunities to participate in economic, social and cultural life, have choice and control over how we live our lives and are enabled to reach our full potential.
