Planting a doesn't automatically mean you've solved a carbon problem.

A forest can be a carbon sink.

But forests can also lose carbon.

Drought.

Fire.

Storms.

Insects.

Disease.

And increasingly, climate stress itself.

New research supported by ESA - European Space Agency found that biomass losses in European forests have increased sharply since 2018.

That's an important reminder:

A carbon sink isn't a permanent label.

It's something that needs to be monitored.

Measured.

Protected.

And understood over time.

This is one reason satellite observation is becoming so important for climate action.

You can't manage what you can't see.

And you definitely can't credibly measure something you aren't monitoring. 🌳🛰️

We talk about climate change like it's a problem for 2050.

Farmers don't have that luxury.

This summer, persistent heat and water shortages have already damaged crops across large parts of Europe.

The latest assessment identifies severe impacts across France, southern Germany, northern and central Italy, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and western Romania.

Which raises a much more practical question:

Are we growing the right things for the climate we are moving into?

Not every crop needs the same amount of water.

Not every crop has the same growing cycle.

Not every crop has the same economic value.

And not every crop gives us the same products.

This means we should probably be asking a much bigger question:

What should European agriculture look like when water becomes more valuable?

That's a conversation about climate.

But it's also a conversation about food, farmers, economics and the future of rural Europe.

And it isn't just about having enough water to drink.

Less water means:

🌽 lower crop yields
🐄 less animal feed
🌳 more stressed forests
⚡ pressure on energy production
🚢 lower river levels
💶 higher costs

The latest EU data shows that persistent heat and water deficits are already damaging summer crops across large parts of Europe.

Some crop forecasts are now up to 14% below the five-year average.

And cooler weather arriving later doesn't magically bring the lost harvest back.

This is the part of climate change we don't talk about enough.

It's not just about temperature.

It's about what happens when the resources our economy depends on become less reliable.

Maybe the bigger climate question isn't:

“How hot will it get?”

Maybe it's:

“What will we still be able to grow?”

Here's an uncomfortable climate question:

What if we actually become very good at removing CO₂… but don't become very good at reducing emissions?

Carbon removal matters.

But it can't become an excuse to keep emitting indefinitely.

At the same time, even if we stopped emitting tomorrow, we would still be dealing with the CO₂ already in the atmosphere.

So we need both.

Cut emissions.

Remove what we can't eliminate.

The difficult part is deciding how much of each and making sure the two don't become substitutes for one another.

That's a conversation worth having.

What if a forest could have a digital twin?

Not a video game version.

A living digital model that continuously combines:

🛰️ satellite imagery
🌦️ weather data
🌱 vegetation data
🤖 AI
📍 ground measurements

…to estimate what is actually happening in the ecosystem.

Is the forest growing?

Is biomass increasing?

Has land use changed?

Is a restoration project working?

Has something been damaged?

And ultimately:

How much carbon is actually being stored?

This is where climate action gets really interesting.

Because the next generation of carbon removal won't just need projects.

It will need proof.

Earth observation is already being used to monitor carbon stored in vegetation and changes across ecosystems.

At Tao Climate, this is one of the areas we’re particularly interested in: combining technology, Earth observation and AI to make climate impact more measurable.

The question isn't:

“Can we plant more?”

It's:

“Can we measure what happened afterwards?”

Imagine we suddenly had enough sustainable aviation fuel to make a meaningful difference.

But not enough for every flight.

Who should get it first?

✈️ Long-haul flights?

🏝️ Flights to remote communities?

🛫 The busiest airports?

🌍 Routes with the fewest alternatives?

💼 Business travel?

Or should airlines simply buy whatever SAF they can get?

This isn't just a technology question.

It's an allocation question.

Europe is putting serious money behind SAF — including €290 million recently approved for Dutch SAF schemes — while researchers are also looking at whether concentrating SAF at certain airports could produce bigger climate and health benefits.

There probably isn't an easy answer.

So: if SAF is scarce, where would you use it first?

is fascinating. But growing biomass isn’t automatically carbon removal.

The real challenge is measuring where the carbon goes — and how long it stays there.

That’s where MRV (measurement, reporting & verification) becomes critical.
