A volunteer community first responder (CFR) from Tipperary, who attended a call for a local person experiencing chest pains, never imagined that he too would be needing the support of his volunteer colleagues and the National Ambulance Service before the end of the day.

Gerry Fitzgerald, a member of CRITICAL’s Carrick-on-Suir CFR group, was walking near his home in Carrick-on-Suir when he began experiencing severe chest pain. He quickly recognised what was happening, returned home and dialled 999. 'I gave the information to the call taker and asked them to activate the CFR group straight away. A member of the team was at my house within two minutes.'

'The relief my wife and I felt when Michael arrived with all the gear was incredible, I knew I was in safe hands. It seemed like the stars aligned for me that day because an ambulance was available and arrived shortly after.'

'I even knew the crew because we had both responded to a chest pain call earlier that day. Everyone worked together brilliantly, and I was brought to hospital in Clonmel.'

'My own experience meant that I really knew the difference we can make as first responders. I received really good care, and it’s great to be able to do that for someone else in my local community'

Last Friday evening in Brian Bonner Culdaff Arms the Culdaff New Years Day Swim committee presented the Bocan CFR Group with a cheque for €8,000 raised from this year New Year’s Day swim.

The group are honoured to have been selected this year as the beneficiary of the swim and extremely grateful for this amazing support. The donation will go towards buying new AED’s to ensure every member is now carrying and AED , buying new training equipment for ongoing training and finally towards the upkeep of the 12 publicly accessible defibs in our area.

A great evening was had by all, thank you to Brian Bonner for the food and to everyone who came along.

The group truly appreciate the support shown by the swim committee and the continued support of everyone in our community and beyond.

Bocan Community First Responders – Going Live on Sunday the 8th of February 🙌🏻👏🏻

We’re pleased to announce that the Bocan Cardiac First Responder (CFR) Group will officially go live on the 8th of February.

From this date, our trained volunteer responders will be available to assist in cardiac emergencies, chest pain and stroke symptoms in the local area, providing early CPR and defibrillation while emergency services are on route.

🚑 Important – How the CFR Group is Activated in an Emergency:

ALWAYS dial 999 or 112 first.
The CFR group cannot be contacted directly by the public.

If appropriate, the emergency call taker will alert the Bocan CFR Group through the official dispatch system, ensuring help is sent as quickly and safely as possible.
