Good to see An Taoiseach Mícheál Martin today backing up the point that floodplains, like the one beside the N20, are not suitable for large-scale development. Hopefully An Coimisiún Pleanála will remember this when deciding whether or not to allow Greensource to plonk a massive development in the middle of this Flood Zone A between Bruree and Charleville!

An Taoiseach, 3 February 2026: “We have brought in a whole lot of regulations around floodplains and people shouldn’t be building on floodplains."

It was great to see coverage of the dire flooding situation between Bruree and Charleville in the Limerick Leader last week. This is the very floodplain where Garrane Green Energy, a.k.a Greensource, want to build nine 170m high wind turbines along with numerous roadways and site works. The proposal to build so many impervious concrete and stone surfaces in a Flood Zone A is hard to believe, and goes against national and local authority planning guidelines. It would reduce the soakage ability of the floodplain, making future flood events even worse than what we saw a few weeks ago. Flood waters would cover an even greater area of farmland, and would come out onto the N20 main road on a more frequent basis, paralysing traffic when they do.

This development is inappropriately sited, and will only make climate adaptation more difficult for people in south Limerick and north Cork. The developer may not know or care about the consequences of pouring concrete in a floodplain but as locals with intimate knowledge of this landscape we surely must. An Coimisiún Pleanála will hear our concerns.

Thanks to councillors John O'Donoghue, Greg Conway, Brigid Teefy and Tommy O'Sullivan for noting the above flood risk in their additions to Limerick Council's submission to ACP, and to Eddie Ryan and PJ Carey too.
