Today is International Day of Biodiversity! This is call to act and transform how we live and reconnect with nature 🌱
We have a duty to protect and care for our local environments. Biodiversity refers to all the living things and ecosystems they make up. We depend on biodiversity for our food systems, health, good water quality, climate regulation, flood protection, and cultural identity. In Ireland, 85% of ‘protected’ areas are in unfavourable conditions. More than half of native plant species are in decline.
Hope is not lost! Here are something you can act on:
🌿 Take part in citizen science workshops to learn more about biodiversity and the problems it faces. For free workshops on stopping the spread of invasive species visit https://streamscapes.ie/education/stopthespread
The workshop series is designed to address the growing threat posed by invasive non-native species to local rivers, wetlands, biodiversity, agriculture, and water quality.
You will learn:
🦠 how invasive species impact ecosystems
🔍how to identify priority species
🏔️ the practical steps individuals and communities can take to help protect local waterways
The above photos are of an eel and freshwater pearl mussels. These mussels are very important indicators of biodiversity as they are only found in healthy, clean, fast flowing rivers.
