The 2024 SDCC Autocross took place on Saturday, September 21st, at McCarthy’s Quarry in Derryleigh, featuring an exciting reverse course layout for this year’s event. Organized as a counting round of the Munster Autocross Championship, the event was overseen by Clerk of the Course (COC) Dylan Doonan and attracted a strong field of competitors across various classes.
Dean Murphy secured the overall fastest time of the day, posting a best run of 02:02.26 in his Kincar Buggy (Class 11), narrowly edging out Cathal Mulcaire in the Casmat 750 (Class 11) by just over a second, with Mulcaire finishing in 02:03.72. Both drivers were locked in a close battle for the top spot, with Murphy’s consistency and pace proving decisive.
In Class 10, David Murphy took first place, finishing with a best time of 02:11.96 in his Semog Bravo, ahead of Ray Hassett and Declan Oregan, who both posted competitive times in their Semog Trophy vehicles. The margins between positions were tight, highlighting the level of competition in this class.
Gerard O Connell, driving a Toyota Celica, was awarded for being the highest-placed SDCC driver, finishing 18th overall with a best time of 02:40.61.
Other notable performances included Joe McHale, who led Class 6 in his Buggy Beresford with a best time of 02:24.06, and Patricia Denning, who topped Class 3 in her Peugeot 106 with a time of 02:25.75, edging out Pat Horan’s Peugeot 208 R2 by a narrow margin of 0.15 seconds.
Overall, the event delivered close competition in several categories, with drivers separated by seconds, underscoring the skill and determination on display across the day.
