Give a Bike, change a life – donate your much-loved unwanted bike to the
Rotary Bikes Africa Project.
The Rotary Club of Douglas are asking people to donate their unwanted bikes
for children in Africa.
They are holding a drop-off morning on SUNDAY 28 TH April 2024 at the Douglas
Community Centre. Help make a difference to a child’s life by giving your much
loved now unwanted bike to a school going child in the Gambia.
The bicycles donated must be sturdy and suitable for the 13-18 age group, as
they will be used over rough terrain, a 24” diameter wheel would be very
suitable. Bikes that require minor repairs are acceptable.
Children in Africa must travel long distances, on foot, to get to school, this is done in
extreme heat, and makes attending school extremely difficult. The bike you donate
will make a huge difference to those children, it is the difference between getting an
education and not.
The bikes are refurbished in Loughan House Prison where participants receive an
accredited FETAC Certificate for their work. The newly refurbished bikes are then
shipped to the Gambia in Africa and distributed to school going children. These bikes
transform their daily lives, they give new lives to families in Africa. Unused bike in
your garage could be life changing for a student in the Gambia. It’s a win-win
situation, a win for the environment, a win for the children in Africa. Mary Long of
Douglas Rotary Club say ‘ this is an amazing project and we are really appreciative
of the support from Cork City Council when we see the difference it makes to the
families in the Gambia. ‘Please donate your unwanted bike today’.
This project has huge benefits in relation to the reuse and recycling of bikes that may
otherwise be dumped, and it ties in with the circular economy.
A drop off container has also been placed at the exit from the Kinsale Civic Amenity
Site, part of Tramore Valley Park, South Link Road, it is also possible to use this
facility.
