The Annual Pioneer Commemoration in honour of Fr. Mathew was held last Tuesday, 7th July in St. Joseph's Cemetery,Tory Top Road, Ballyphehane. We could not have asked for a better night to hold such an event. as the weather conditions were ideal for gathering together and remembering a man who took great care of his flock in Cork City in his time. It was a great honour to have Cllr. Albert Deasy join us as Deputy Lord Mayor, along with his wife Anne, and we really enjoyed hearing his memories of growing up in the area and of his visits to the cemetery as a young boy and his sense of Fr. Mathew. Fr. John Walsh P.P Togher, led us beautifully in the prayers and there was great participation from the people who joined us from other countries, from East and West Cork and Cork city and the suburbs. The intentions of all those who are suffering now because of alcohol and drug addictions were included in the ceremony. We are indebted to Michael O' Sullivan and his team in the cemetery for making this event possible each year.
