Meelick Walkway

Meelick Weir known locally as Meelick Rampart has been connecting Meelick, Co. Galway to Lusmagh Co. Offaly since the 1920’s. It has been used by locals, visitors and tourists from both sides to walk over the river. This section of the Shannon in previous years was a major Salmon and Trout fishing spot. The walkway allowed locals and visitors to walk across the Shannon and spend time at Victoria Lock watching boats pass through the lock either on their way to Banagher , Co. Offaly or Portumna, Co. Galway.

Currently

In 2009 major flooding damaged the walkway making it unusable. For the past 9 years the absence of the walkway has prevented both locals and visitors from experiencing the beauty and tranquility of the Shannon at Meelick. In 2017 Waterways Ireland submitted planning permission to repair the damage caused by the flooding. Permission has been granted but to-date this work has not began.
