Milford and Kerrykeel Ce Scheme paid tribute to long time Chairperson, Ian Mc Garvey who recently stepped away from the role after 22 years of dedicated service.
A small presentation took place in his honor in the old school community centre Kerrykeel on Wednesday last, attended by fellow Ce committee members, Ce participants and new incoming Chairperson; Cllr Declan Meehan.
Ce Supervisor, James Gibbons gave a run down on Ian’s achievements in his long life in community work, soccer, varying work experiences, politics and above all, his support of the elderly and those less able to advocate for themselves.
In coming Chairperson, Cllr Declan Meehan congratulated Ian on his long service to the community long before he became a Councillor in 2004 and extended his admiration to Ian for his positivity, enthusiasm and good health now in his 95th year.
Ian himself spoke eloquently of his experiences in life and in particular his role in politics and advocating for people. He spoke of the frustration of trying to achieve stuff that should have been routine but sometimes met with resistance for no logical reason.
He spoke of his admiration for the work the Ce participants do in their local areas on a weekly basis and the great contribution they make in community life from Tidy Towns, Sport, Church and Graveyard maintenance and Community centre maintenance but to name a few.
James Gibbons spoke of the great contribution that Ian’s wife, Marjorie, had made over their long life together and recalled the recent interview they both gave on Highland Radio which epitomised so many couples of that era,… making the best of the little they had.
Ce Treasurer, Deirdre Crossan presented Ian with an inscribed Galway Crystal Vase and James presented Ian with a bunch of flowers for his wife, Marjorie, who was unable to be present.
Thanks is extended to Ciaran Gallagher and Deirdre who set up the room in the School and provided refreshments.
Thanks also to Breda Mc Nulty for photos.
