Annual War of Independence ceremony at Saleen 🇨🇮

Easter Sunday morning saw a very successful and interesting annual wreathlaying ceremony at the War of Independence Monument in Saleen.
The ceremony recalled and honoured the memory of local War of
Independence veterans – ordinary, unassuming people who, at no material
gain to themselves, risked danger and even death to help free Ireland from
British imperial rule.

Guest speaker at the event was historian Patricia Curtin; an enthusiastic and
skilled researcher of local history who traces her own family roots into the
distant past of our area. Patricia delved with remarkable precision into local
events and patriots going back as far as the United Irishmen in the late
eighteenth century. She left many of the fifty or so attendees thirsty for more
information.

A wreath was laid at the monument by Betty O’Riordan, whose uncles died in
the struggle for Irish Independence. Following the rendering of our national
anthem, during which the tricolour was officially raised by Jerry O’Brien, a
reminder-announcement was made of the next forthcoming historical event in
the neighbourhood.

That will be the Thomas Kent annual memorial ceremony
at the Kent Memorial site in Farsid/Rostellan.
It will take place on Saturday 9th
May at 3.00 pm.
