Congratulations to Aghada’s Heroes.
🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬

What a sporting week this has been for the Parish of Aghada! Our Monument Committee joins in congratulating our local heroes.

Once again, our Aghada ladies are the senior football champions of Cork. Their county-final victory over Naomh Aban on Sunday last was nothing short of momentous and solidifies Aghada’s position as one of the County’s very top clubs.

The final itself was a thriller, with Naomh Aban bravely contesting every minute of the contest. But with no fewer than four Aghada players raising green flags, the East Cork women were deserving victors. We are privileged to join in the praise of everyone involved in any way with this great team and club.

High praise, too, for our gallant men, who have now reached the County Intermediate Hurling final. A storming, ten-point semi-final win against a highly-regarded Sarsfields outfit has placed our Aghada lads right on the cusp of County glory.

This county final will be against Bandon, who themselves had a powerful win against Midleton over the weekend. The final should be a not-to-be-missed thriller and we join in wishing our men in green every luck and ultimate victory in the final battle.

🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬 Aghada Heroes 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬

Well done to Aghada’s Senior ladies footballers in their victory over Mourneabbey in Last Sunday’s semi- final. It was widely expected to be a cracker and it turned out to be just that.

Both squads produced great team efforts and every single member of each team deserves praise and congratulations.

Members of our Saleen Community Monument Committee join in congratulating our local sporting heroes and wish them best of luck in the County final in 2 weeks time.

Annual War of Independence ceremony at Saleen 🇨🇮

Easter Sunday morning saw a very successful and interesting annual wreathlaying ceremony at the War of Independence Monument in Saleen.
The ceremony recalled and honoured the memory of local War of
Independence veterans – ordinary, unassuming people who, at no material
gain to themselves, risked danger and even death to help free Ireland from
British imperial rule.

Guest speaker at the event was historian Patricia Curtin; an enthusiastic and
skilled researcher of local history who traces her own family roots into the
distant past of our area. Patricia delved with remarkable precision into local
events and patriots going back as far as the United Irishmen in the late
eighteenth century. She left many of the fifty or so attendees thirsty for more
information.

A wreath was laid at the monument by Betty O’Riordan, whose uncles died in
the struggle for Irish Independence. Following the rendering of our national
anthem, during which the tricolour was officially raised by Jerry O’Brien, a
reminder-announcement was made of the next forthcoming historical event in
the neighbourhood.

That will be the Thomas Kent annual memorial ceremony
at the Kent Memorial site in Farsid/Rostellan.
It will take place on Saturday 9th
May at 3.00 pm.
