SEMRA received at call at 02:30 this morning from An Garda Síochána to assist a camper who had got into difficulties when their tent blew away in worsening weather conditions. The camper was able to navigate down to the Boolas loop and was met by team members who escorted them out to the team vehicles where they were assessed and given some food. An Garda Síochána members on scene kindly transported the camper to the Garda station for the night to dry off, recharge phone & arrange transport back home on the bus. Even though temperatures were warmer this last week, once you are wet and without shelter, hypothermia is a real risk and it was a pretty miserable night on the hill so they did the right thing to call for help. Sometimes, no matter how well prepared you are, things just go wrong and that’s why we are here.

SEMRA received a call today at 15:30 from An Garda Síochána and National Ambulance Service (NAS) to assist a walker with a lower leg injury above Coumshingaun Lough. Team members responded to the mast at Kilclooney Woods and and made their way up to the casualty’s location. The casualty was assessed and their leg placed in a vacuum splint. Rescue 116 was on scene shortly after, a winchman was lowered to further assess the injured walker and prepare them for winching into the heli. Team members assisted with the hi-line operation as the winchman and walker were winched on board. Stand down issued at 18:40, everyone safely off the hill.

Team members travelled to Waterford Airport today to meet with some of the Rescue 117 crew and get a closer look at the very impressive AW189. We are very lucky to have the support of the Irish Coast Guard especially R117. The crew couldn’t have been more welcoming & helpful. We look forward to training with them and the new helicopter in the near future.

Carlsberg don’t do rescues, but if they did……..
Call received from An Garda Síochána today at 13:54 for an injured walker above the Sgilloge lakes in the Comeraghs. The walker had a lower leg injury and was unable to continue. A team member and a trainee happened to be close by walking with their own group. They were with the injured walker in approx 10 mins. As luck would have it, Rescue 117 was on a training exercise over the Comeraghs at the same time. They dropped two paramedics to the scene, who treated the casualty and provided pain relief, before being winched up to the helicopter for transfer to hospital. Stand down issued at 15:09. We hope the recovery is as fast as the rescue!
This was our first call out with the new Coast Guard AW189 helicopter. It was also a baptism of fire for our trainee.

Tonight’s the night, if you can make it, we’d love to see you there.
