Community Group Clears Over 340kg Of Rubbish From Seafield Pier - News % Clare FM

We organise a big beach cleanup in Seafield each spring and September and are registered to do so again this year. However, by Sunday evening, the waste situation on Seafield Pier meant we had to take action. On Monday morning, we contacted the Environment Section in Clare County Council and obtained a waste disposal pass. Forum volunteers then organised a beach clean yesterday afternoon and evening. And volunteers drove 340kg of waste to Inagh Recycling Centre this morning. That is a large volume of waste. Most of it household waste. This is the second year in a row we are having trouble with build up of waste on Seafield Pier. On a brighter note, a big shout out to Patrick along with his three lovely grandchildren who came across to help us out this morning. Children will always give you hope for the future!

The sand under the life ring pole at the back strand (West Beach) eroded away in an earlier storm. The Council have now re-positioned the life ring and pole in a good central location at that side of the beach. Hopefully, no one will have a reason to use it! But if it is needed, it’s in position.

It’s the last Saturday in June, so that means it’s World Sand Dune Day! Without the sand dunes in Seafield we wouldn’t have our beautiful beach. In our community’s case, they also act as a frontline defence to mitigate coastal flooding. So as the saying goes “sand dunes protect us, let’s protect them.”

Many thanks to the volunteers who collected a whopping 380kg of waste from the beach! Not alone has this removed debris from out of the path of marine life, but it has also helped to spruce up the beach ahead of the next public holiday in June!

It has been a beautiful day by the seaside. We took the opportunity to start erecting temporary chestnut sand fencing in Zone A - Backstrand. The colours of the ocean made for an incredible backdrop! We fenced around the lifebuoy to ensure it is easily accessible. It was a breezy day, but the breeze is helping to build up sand behind the existing fencing. Many thanks to our volunteers!

Exciting news! Seafield Beach has been included in the DETECT project. Delivered by a research team from UCC and funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, DETECT stands for Digital Environmental Technology for Enhanced Coastal Zone Management. DETECT is working to create digital twins of vulnerable coastal zones. This work will prove of enormous benefit to Seafield Beach. A digital twin enables simulations to be run that can inform future environmental policy and coastal management decisions. The image accompanying this post was taken by DETECT on April 18. A very sincere thank you to the team of volunteers who did a fabulous job erecting the first section of temporary chestnut sand fencing in Zone B - front strand in Seafield today. We had perfect weather for the job. In prepping for today, we discovered that the height of sand deposited behind the timber posts has risen by approximately 30cm to 40cm in places across the beach. It’s very heartening to see nature based solutions working on Seafield beach!

It’s month in Ireland! A Forum member was out and about for a in Seafield today. It’s spruced up for what will hopefully be a sunny weekend!

The certainly lived up to its name today! The waves looked beautiful against the blue of the sea and sky though.
