Could you recognise the signs?

Human trafficking doesn't always look like the movies.
It often hides in plain sight.

Someone experiencing exploitation may:
▪️ Appear frightened, anxious or under someone else's control.
▪️ Be unable to speak freely or always have someone answering for them.
▪️ Have no access to their passport, identification or money.
▪️ Seem isolated, withdrawn or living and working under poor conditions.
One sign on its own may not mean someone is being trafficked. But if something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it.

Over the past 18 months, Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland has been helping communities across Ireland recognise the signs of human trafficking because awareness is one of our strongest tools in preventing exploitation.

Every conversation, every event and every person who learns something new helps make our communities safer.

As we continue our countdown to 30 July – UN World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, take a few moments to familiarise yourself with the signs.

Today we begin a ten-day awareness campaign ahead of the United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July.

For the past 18 months, Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland has been raising awareness across Ireland through community events, education and advocacy.

Over the coming days we'll share facts, signs to look out for and ways every community can help.

Because trafficking is often hidden in plain sight.

Eight women have died in violent circumstances in the Republic of Ireland so far in 2026.

Eight women, each with a name, a family, friends and a life that mattered.

According to Women's Aid the number of women who have died violently in Ireland in 2026 has already surpassed the total recorded for the whole of 2025.

Since the Women’s Aid Femicide Watch began in 1996, 286 women have died violently in Ireland.

As Soroptimists, we work to transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and action. We remember these women, and we continue to speak out against violence against women in all its forms.

We must continue to name it, challenge it and work together for a society where every woman and girl can live safely and free from violence.

We are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic death of Noreen Daly, a new member of the SI Dungarvan club. Our heartfelt sympathies go to Noreen’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. We also extend our thoughts and support to her local community and to our Soroptimist sisters in Dungarvan who are grieving this devastating loss.

As an organisation committed to advancing the rights, status and wellbeing of women and girls, we stand firmly against violence against women in all its forms. While these tragedies can often feel distant, it is particularly heartbreaking and sobering when such violence touches our own community so closely.

At this difficult time, we remember Noreen and stand in solidarity with all those affected by her loss. As Soroptimists, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ending violence against women and girls in all its forms. No woman should lose her life in such a tragic and horrific way. We continue to advocate for a world where every woman can live free from violence, fear and harm.

Coercive control is not one incident. It’s a pattern.
