📣 Skills for Tomorrow Fund Open for Applications

⏰ Closing date: Monday 29 June at 1pm

Community and voluntary organisations are invited to apply for the Skills for Tomorrow Fund, a €1.5 million initiative supporting inclusive pathways to employment for people and communities experiencing marginalisation.

The fund will support innovative projects focused on youth and adult employment pathways, helping to tackle structural disadvantage and promote greater participation in the future world of work. Projects exploring the use of AI and data-driven approaches are also encouraged.

Successful projects can receive grants of between €150,000 and €187,500, along with mentoring, capacity-building supports, and access to networks through Rethink Ireland’s Accelerator Programme.

We have Baltinglass Matters keeping a watchful eye on our precious connection with the capital, the 132 bus. It seems that big plans collapsed and one bus became unfit for purpose. What next?

It has become all too frequent for the Bus Éireann 132 (Bunclody to Dublin) service to have cancellations. Today's (Mon. 25 May) 5.30pm service from Dublin (the last of the day) was cancelled without warning. This left commuting workers, students and shoppers to sort their own way home, on the hottest day of the year so far.

This is just the latest failure on this route. They happen so frequently that getting the 132 is like gambling at roulette. The main excuse for the shoddy service is the recurrent breakdown of the older of two buses. Commuters on the route would be better able to depend on the service if BÉ allocated ONE NEW BUS to the 132.

Last year they were to increase the frequency from 4 a day to 8 a day. That too was cancelled at the last minute. Currently they aren't even providing the 4 regularly. BÉ is contracted to provide this service by TFI - Transport for Ireland. What TFI actually does is a mystery. It doesn't matter how undependable Bus Éireann is, TFI does absolutely nothing about it.

From now on, Baltinglass Matters will highlight all reported failures of service on the 132 route so that Bus Éireann's disregard may be measured and recorded.

Conn McDunphy was first into Baltinglass on May 23rd, now he's won the 2026 Rás Tailteann. It was great to see abaltinglass looking so well on the 6 o' clock news. The new cycle routes were visible and residents and Baltinglass Tidy Towns had the town looking smart.

Here is some interesting information about ROADS and new develoments.
Internal Site Roads: For private commercial developments, the developer is fully responsible for designing, building, and maintaining all internal roads, parking, and footpaths to required safety standards.
***
Public Access & Junctions: If the business creates a new entrance or alters an existing public road, the Planning authority (e.g., Wicklow County Council in the Baltinglass/Wicklow area) will attach conditions to the planning grant. This legally obligates the developer to construct safe intersections, pedestrian crossings, or turning lanes at their own expense.
***
Special Levies: Developers must pay Development Contributions to the local council. These funds are pooled to help the local authority upgrade wider public roads and utilities in the area to support overall town development.
***
Road Bonds: To ensure the work is done properly, councils often require the developer to put a "Road Bond" in place before construction begins. If the developer fails to build or repair the roads properly, the council can call on this bond to finish the infrastructure.
***
Disruption Management: During the construction phase, the developer must manage the impact of heavy vehicles, maintain temporary traffic management plans, and repair any damage caused to the local road network by their construction traffic.
