Filming is going on from 6am til 7. They are recreating a 1950s look, so please park your modern car so it cannot be seen.

Tidy Towns and the Economic and Tourism Town Team are delighted to see our picturesque town with its intact vernacular streetscape and buildings used in director’s Colm Bairéad new 1950s set feature film Mary Rose.
The Town Team have devised a suggested colour scheme for Baltinglass drawing from our rich natural surrounds; pastel blues, greens, purples, yellows and browns.
Butter yellow featured in many of our wildflowers and a dairying heritage embedded in the life of the town, cornflower blue, a flower which once grew widely in corn and flax fields and foxglove pink provide some of the inspirations.
Textile production associated with the town and its hinterland and the use of local flowers and fauna for their dye making properties, is another source for the colour palette. Purple loosestrife gives brown and purple dyes, brambles which give us blackberries produces green, black, blue and yellows, depending on what part of the plant is used, St John’s Worth hues of yellow, green and maroon, while gorse, so visible on Baltinglass hill, gives bright sunny shades of yellow and deep green.
William Hanbidge in Memories of West Wicklow, 1813-1939 informs us that you could tell where a person was from by the colour of their clothes, as the dyes for home produced clothes came from local plants.
The Team are encouraging owners of premises to paint colours drawn from this pallet, creating their own interpretation, while paying attention to the overall look, in enhancing our pretty little town. They have secured funding for this……..
As ever, thanks to the increasing number of owners/businesses who have brightened up their premises for all to enjoy. And best wishes to Colm and those involved in Mary Rose, we look forward to its release at the end of 2027/early 2028.

Thanks Baltinglass Matters for the advice- we can leave out WATER for hedgehogs and hoglets, the young ones. Get a saucer and Hydrate a Hoglet.

Hoglet admissions have been keeping us busy this summer and some of the young ones are starting their prerelease journey in our purpose built outdoor hedgehog runs!

Hedgehogs, and all wildlife, have had a tough summer. With the lack of rain, water has become hard to access causing dehydration of mother hedgehogs. The lack of rain has also caused the ground to dry up and the invertebrates hedgehogs rely on for food to become scarce.

These combined factors have led to a steep increase in admissions of abandoned and struggling young hoglets.

Volunteers have been working overtime making sure these spikey patients are being fed and cleaned every few hours, and we are delighted to see groups of them moving into our outdoor runs where they are acclimatising to the weather, foraging and natural nesting materials before their return to the wild!

You can help hedgehogs by leaving out shallow dishes of fresh water overnight, leaving scrubby areas for them to take shelter in and checking for nests before proceeding with any garden works. The National Hedge Cutting Ban will come to an end on September first, but hedgehogs have late litters, so it is important to always check hedges before cutting. If you find a small hedgehog on its own, or have accidentally disturbed a nest, take a short video and send it to your local wildlife rehabilitator for advice!

The film shoot is happening early on Tuesday morning. The film crew has been doing their best to warn us all about traffic. Filming is stop and start and they will stop for us to walk, push a buggy, scooter or drive through.
These guys made An Cailin Ciuin. This new film is about Ireland in the 50s.
They MUST paint things back as they were.
Baltinglass Parish has made sure that Fatima Hall will be repainted. As for the private home owners, they can decide if they want the repaint.
