Cork Biodiversity Hub at the Summit of European Mayors

We were delighted to be part of the Summit of European Mayors in Cork on 5–6 October, where our work on biodiversity was showcased as an example of the innovative initiatives taking place across our city.

On Tuesday morning, Maria delivered a keynote address, and on Monday afternoon, we also welcomed a visiting group to Ballincollig to learn more about our work on the ground and how local communities can play a vital role in creating a greener, more biodiverse future.

What a fascinating evening at Cork Biodiversity Hub last Thursday!

We were delighted to welcome Professor Maria McNamara from UCC, who gave a brilliant talk on Ireland’s fossil heritage. She brought our prehistoric past to life, making it both fascinating and exciting!

Perhaps the best part? Two 12-year-olds in the audience who already dream of becoming palaeontologists. The future of fossil discovery looks bright!

A huge thank you to Professor McNamara for such an engaging and inspiring evening, and to everyone who joined us.

Cork Biodiversity Hub was delighted to see Rosewood Estate be presented with the award for Ireland's Greenest Suburb at yesterday's award ceremony for Ireland's Greenest Places.

We got a wonderful photo at the award ceremony of Rosewood residents, Fergal and Yana O'Neill, Noel Sheehan, Residents Committee chairman Dan O'Riordan, with one of the judges, Rosita Boland, and Eithne Lynch of Cork Biodiversity Hub who nominated them for the award.

Rosewood Estate in Ballincollig are well-deserved winners in the Greenest Suburb category of the 2026 Greenest Places in Ireland Competition.

At a time of climate and biodiversity crisis, their two-pronged approach to these interlinked problems makes for a winning formula – creating a space for nature to thrive and simultaneously developing clean energy with a large-scale group solar scheme.

Rosewood is leading the way towards a new mode of living, and has charted a course for other communities to follow to create a sustainable future for people and planet.

Scrub clearance along the N22 at Curraheen has raised serious concerns for local biodiversity. The vegetation provided habitat and a wildlife corridor for hedgehogs, birds, bats, foxes and many plant species.

We cannot continue to destroy what little we have left of our biodiversity.

We are very concerned to hear about the extensive vegetation clearance along the road between Ballincollig and the Ballincollig Bypass.

Large areas of vegetation have been stripped back to bare earth, with further clearance apparently planned. Contractors told residents it was being done to prevent fire.

If that is the reason, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) needs to explain why such extensive clearance was necessary and what consideration was given to biodiversity.

We need safer roads, but we also need to protect our natural habitats alongside them.
