Lessons with Ciaran Owens were always a highlight of the week for Paddy and truth be told, for Ciarán too. 😃
Paddy was one of those children who brought great fun and character wherever he went. He bounced into his lessons, although he was often just as interested in what was happening outside the window as what was happening in front of him. That was Paddy – curious, observant and always himself.
When Fleadh time came around, however, Paddy knew Ciarán would keep him on the right path. “Slow and steady,” Ciarán would say, offering a few constructive pointers to help him along. There were serious moments when the work had to be done, but there was always a laugh before Paddy headed out the door. “Keep her lit” would often be the final words, followed by an oul laugh and a bit of banter between them.
Ciarán would often call into the Rooney home on his way to and from gigs with the Tumbling Paddies. Paddy had that something special about him, the kind of young lad who made you want to give your very best. He had a love for music and for the craic that was infectious.
One year, Ciaran lent Paddy his treasured Davy Boyle banjo. Paddy could get a mighty ring out of it and treated it like gold. It was nearly like handing him a million pounds, but Ciaran knew it was all for the best. Giving Paddy every opportunity to learn and progress was something he was always happy to do. 🪕
The bond they shared through music was something special. The lessons were filled with laughter, patience, encouragement and progress, but more than that, they were filled with friendship. Paddy’s music, his personality, his sense of fun and his gentle presence will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. 🙏
Paddy leaves behind memories that will be treasured for years to come, and a place in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him that can never be filled.
This year, Ciarán will lead our Wheels & Jigs cyclists alongside all of Paddy’s friends and family. It was the quickest “yes” we received, a testament to the love and respect everyone has for Paddy. As we cycle, we will remember Paddy and honour his memory every mile of the way. 💙
