One month has passed since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Almost 3.7 million people have left the country, 6.5 million are displaced within Ukraine. From the beginning, Order of Malta personnel have been on the ground to help the people of Ukraine during this dark time, providing warm meals, drinking water, blankets, medical and psychosocial care, transport of relief goods, shelter and other relief activities. Tens of thousands of aid workers of the Order of Malta have been working continuously for 4 weeks to alleviate the suffering of those affected - in Ukraine, at the borders and in other surrounding countries. Over 275,000 people have already received help from us at the border crossings. Over 60,000 meals have been distributed to displaced people in Ukraine.

We are hosting a quiz in Paddy Dunnes on Friday next April 1st at 9pm. All proceeds go to Malteser International. To book a table please contact Nigel on 0863345914.

Four in five people involved in sports clubs are not confident in the use of a defibrillator according to a study published in the Irish Medical Journal. Lack of knowledge on how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), fear of using the machine incorrectly, unnecessarily shocking the patient, poor understanding of what it does, and concerns around legal liability are the primary reasons they are not used more in sudden cardiac arrests situations.

Order of Malta Athy unit can provide your club with AED training that will ensure that those involved will have the confidence to use the AED if required.

If your club/organisation requires defibrillator training please message us or contact Nigel on 086 3345 914

Hopefully Christian Eriksen will make a good recovery following the incident during this evening's game at Euro 2020.

If you or your sports club would like to learn what to do if a similar incident occurred at your venue, contact us by pm as we have the expertise to provide the training you need.

This is National Volunteering Week and is an opportunity to recognize and thank all our volunteers who lend their time, talents and resources to meet the critical needs of our community. Since 1950, Order of Malta volunteers have given of their time and skills to help the community of Athy and beyond.

Amidst the pandemic, while many people stayed home, our volunteers continued to deliver essential services and offer care, comfort and more to support the well-being of the local community.

Today we have a crew in the Vaccination Centre in Athlone providing first aid cover. We also have a number of patient transfers planned for later in the week.
